the second pic. is with the brake stay that i bought an the old 85 swingarm with the smaller carrier.the third one is with the old brake stay overtop of the new one{on the 89 swingarm}

 

Sounds like you need to find the correct brake caliper bracket. They same caliper off of the 85 setup will work just need the matching bracket for the updated brake stay.

 

but why is the brake stay that i got wrong?is the 86-87 carrier smaller than the 88-89?if you look the bolt wont even fit.

so now you have a 250r carrier, and 250r brake stay and it still doesn't fit. i think your swinger maybe a 450r

it can't be for a 450r.i bought a 250r swinger and carrier.the top mount on the brake stay isn't high enough.i just looked at my son's and the brake caliper is the same but the stay and caliper mount are different.

 

i just went on ebay and the 450r swingarm has a bunch of mounting brackets on the side.it's deff.a 250r one.

 

The carrier(and brake stay) is different on a 85 ATC. At least the caliper will bolt up once you have the right stuff.

new lsr axle just arrived.still can't put it in!!!!!

And if it takes the same bearings as a 450...I have bearings you can have also...

 

The bearing carrier is essentially a cam. Its that way for your chain adjustment.
Do you have it turned too far forward or backward? if so that would put that front bolt hole on the bracket too low to get the bolt in.

 

i understand but the stay "stay's"in one spot.it doesn't move when you adjust the chain.

 

it's not the carrier.it's the stay mount hole isn't tall enough,and the caliper mount is wrong.

Well it should raise and lower the bolt holes as you roll the carrier forward and backward. That is the reason for the bushing with the 2 mill flats that is on your swingarm and the carrier goes over when properly mounted. The carrier slides forward and back, but also up and down. Try taking off the 88-89 brake stay and rolling the carrier 180 degrees, then remount the brake stay. See if that works.

 

no problem! that stay should move up, down, and all around when the carrier is spun though.

 

where the brake stay goes is straight with the axle.yes the carrier does go up and down,as well as froward and back but the stay doesn't moveup and down.the cam part it on the carier to housing{swingarm}part.

 

you rotate the carrier and it pushes the bolt holes up and down, the second picture on the original post looks about right

Its all an eccentric, so it all moves. Axle, carrier...everything. However, I must be wrong since you say so.

 

Is that picture with the axle/ chain adjustment with the axle at its highest (upward) possible point (carrier rotation in the swingarm)?
That plate has to move forward and up and down with the axle to keep the pads on the disc when you rotate the carrier to adjust the chain.

 

I think bigmatt61 is correct...this exact same thing happened to me when re-installing my rear end. Rotate the carrier with it inside the swing-arm, you will see how the brake caliper mounting holes can get too close to the swing-arm housing, therefore not leaving enough clearance for the caliper to mount.

 

You have an 88/89 swingarm, with an 85 stay, and the wrong carrier & axle. You cannot mix an 85 stay, carrier & axle with any of the same parts for 86 to 89. Need to keep to specific years; all componets must be 85 for an 85 assembly (swingarm, carrier, stay, axle) as well as for 86 & 87 and 88 & 89, the swingarm being what changed in 88/89.

that's why i bought all 89 parts.i didn't want to have miss matched parts.89 swingarm,carrier,brake stay,axle,"new and used".i just wanted the exact asame as my son's,just incase he had a problem with his while he was racing.

 

Post a picture of the caliper you are trying to mount.

 

ok.i went back outside and looked at my son's 89r again.i think you guys are right about the carrier bearring.it's so hard to mock things up without everything you need.i do believe the brake stay will work.i just put the carrier in and had the holes toward the back-top.so hopefully all i need is the brake caliper mount.

 

85 stays are different from 86-89, 85 bearing carriers are different from 86-89 as well as the 85 axle and rear break mount bracket. Looks like you have a few parts mixed up...however; if you bought all 89 parts, then you should have no issues with any 88/89 swingarm, 86-89 rear brake assembly, any 86-89 carrier and any 86 to 89 axle.
