Hey All, I'm hoping somebody can help me out with some idle issues I'm having with a 2011 TRX250 my wife rides. It always fires right up, but won't stay running when cold unless throttle is applied.  If I adjust the idle speed screw to where it will run when it's cold, by the time it gets hot the engine is racing like crazy at idle. Is this common for these things?;No big deal in the Summer, but when it's cold out, it gets really old having to keep a thumb on the throttle to keep it running high enough to keep it from dying and it's a real pain to try to finagle everything to get into reverse. I ride a carbureted Kawasaki KLR650 myself, so am not new to carbed engines but the TRX has me stumped. Any advice, information or opinions would be greatly appreciated.   Everything is stock and untouched except for me fiddling around with what I believe is the idle speed screw on the right side of the carb. Machine has about 30 hours on it since we bought it new and has done this since it was new.

first of all this is a trx250r 2 stroke site.i think i can help you though.just leave the choke on alittle till it get's warmed up.durring the winter i usually have to turn mine up just alittle because of the winter gas..good luck.

Turning that screw will control how much gas you give the engine. Turn in for more gas out for less.my guess is u need more cas for the cold air so turn it in half a turn or so. Keep the choke on till it warms up wait till warm befor u start making any adjustment

Ah, sorry about that, but thanks for the info, american opel. I appreciate it. Unfortunately, the choke really seems to have no effect on the idle. For some reason, the manual says to go ahead and take it "off choke" as soon as it starts. But, it doesn't seem to really run any different immediately after starting with the choke on or off and that seems odd because my KLR definitely idles faster with the choke on when it's cold. Perhaps I have a choke issue. If I start it with the choke on when it's cold and leave the choke on, it still dies if I don't keep giving it fuel via the throttle lever. I'll look around and try to find a forum specific to the 4-stroke model instead of the 2-stroke. After considering your choke response, it would seem to me the issue could very well be with the choke, just don't know exactly what or how. The choke lever seems to operate smoothly, but I suppose it might be some kind of adjustment issue.

Thanks, adavis. I considered the choke in the post above, but is it possible I'm just making too much of an adjustment with the screw? I've turned it up while it's cold to where it would run, but then when it was hot and the engine was racing, I turned it back down to get a reasonable idle. Perhaps I need to split the difference. If I adjust it back down to a normal idle when it's hot, it won't idle without applying throttle when it's cold even with the choke on. I'd just take it to the dealer and let them look at it, but I hate giving dealers labor money if I can figure it out with the help of others and fix it on my own.

I have an 06 that acts funky like that when the slow jet is plugged.the slow jet opening is very small and plugs easily with todays crappy gas after sitting for a while.Im not sure this is your problem ,just thought I would mention it

Take the carb apart and clean the carb completely. Your issue is related to the choke and the fuel passages leading to and from the choke. If the choke and choke fuel passages worked correctly, when applying choke the engine would see a lot more fuel and idle much lower, if the choke was left on, the engine would eventually die out. This is typical for this type of carb as soon as the choke and fuel passages gum up. As stated, todays poor quality fuels case a lot more fuel issues than in the past.

Sounds good guys. Thanks. I'll pull the carb off and give it a good cleaning. I've always put Seafoam in the tank in the Winter, but not in the Summer and it does sit for a few weeks at a time so the ethanol is probably gumming it up. I use a straight Pinesol soak for carbs.
