Hi guys,

I am new here, and new to the 250r's but have years of experience with other atv's and 2 stroke Honda's, mainly cr250's. My question is this, I picked up an 86 R from a buddy who needed money. The plan was for him to buy it back when you got his taxes back, but do to other financial set backs he has decided to let me keep the quad. It did not have spark when I bought it, however when I got it home after unloading it from the truck it did have spark. Odd right? Well over the next few days it would do that, one day it would have spark the next no spark. Well I found that if I don't have spark all I have to do is "tap" the cdi with a screwdriver handle and then I have spark again. So I am going to say I need a new CDI? Would you agree? Also for some background info, I did test all electrical components after buying it. Everything checked good expect the coil, I did replace that with a new honda unit. When it has spark it is a nice bright blue spark.

Second thing is I actually went out and rode it for the first time yesterday. It died shortly into the ride, wouldn't fire and then I tapped on the cdi and boom fired right up. It didn't die out again while riding it, and for the most part the quad felt very solid. Ran good low, mid and high end but every once in a while it would kind of bog down for a second or die out for just split second while on full throttle. Could this be the CDI as well? I guess I am confused because everyone has always told me that if a CDI is bad the bike wont start, period. But can they show signs like I am seeing before going out completely?

Next I know more than likely it is the CDI and I will need a new one, and I know from past experience that OEM is really the only good option. However I am having a heck of a time finding a new oem CDI. I would really really really prefer to not use a used unit. Do you know where I can find a new OEM 86 CDI?? Another option would be the cr ignition conversion, which I am not completely opposed to, however I am having a heck of a time finding a 2001 system for anything less than about $450. I only paid $800 for the bike, and have another $70 into the new coil and cap I put in. I would prefer to stay with the stock system, unless someone knows where to find a conversion for less $? Also will other years of the CR ignition work? Is 01 the only year, or is it just the best year?

Thank you guys for your time!! I really appreciate it.

could be a bad connection or a bad harness. I had electrical problems all winter I struggled with. I replaced the cdi and coil with new OEM ones and it stillhad intermident spark and some time would start then not. At the time I was using a non resistor plug. So I got a differnt harness fron carlos @ bdt put that on and switched to a resistor plug now it runs great. I also had a Vapor trail tech inserment cluster on for rpm, temp and MPH which would screw up the timming when the hi temp light would come on. Once I ride it some more I am gona hook up the trail tech, brake light switches and teither switch one at a time. I think what it could have been is I had a small fire theat melted the wires going in to the cdi 2 years ago then I completly stripped the machine over the winter of 10-11 added all my extra electrical thing then nothing but problem. It was lke it was interfearance. It was a pain.

Well I just went out and tried to start it, no spark. Tapped the cdi with a screw driver and my spark came back. I am not concerned with having lights, I currently dont have them. I might just bite the bullet and upgrade to the cr ignition, anything I should know before doing this? Any major issues or problems? Or is it pretty much bolt on and go?

it sounds like you pretty much have it figured out, but i am curious if you have check your ground connection? also next time you don't get spark just wiggle the connection at the cdi instead of tapping on it. maybe it is the harness and not the cdi box.

You will need the ignition, adapter plate, and coil mount. You can buy it as a package from bdt or Esr.

A bad CDI or faulty connectors. Try cleaning the harness and the CDI connetors well, oxidation forms and causes shorts. The CR250R IGN is the best "plug-n-play" upgrade for the "R" IMO...

Carlos.
I did clean them a few weeks ago when I was having one of the "no spark" days. Didn't help, but then taped the box and had spark again. I guess me asking if the box itself was bad was a stupid question, I really have no doubt it is. My main question was could it cause the issues I am having while riding it? Sometimes Ill have a bog or hesitation but most of the time it runs strong. The bog doesn't happen in any one throttle position at any one time, its very random. I was also thinking this was the cdi, if it was a carb issue I would have to think it would be more consistent? Maybe I'm wrong?

Yes it can cause the issues you stated...

Since you tap the CDI and it sparks, it does sound like a CDI issue. The CDI really cannot be checked with certainty, best to replace with a known good OEM. The wire haranes can also be acting up; broken or frayed wires, bad connectors, ect...

Taping the CDI and getting a spark when you don't get one, has nothing to do with jetting. You may have more than one issue going on at the same time, electrical & jetting. Need to solve the "no spark" issue first, then tackle jetting.

Thank you Carlos. I think I am just going to upgrade to the cr ignition. A nearly 30 year old electrical system is a ticking time bomb anyways. At least then I will know the electrical system is good.

i have a brand new 87 cdi if it works with your year let me know. On that note. i too had the same problem i bought the new cdi and found that i had a different wire harness all together.. the plug wouldnt match.. so i ordered another one.. since you cant return electrical parts.. well come to find out it was doing the same thing with the new one.. spark one min no spark the next.. i twisted the cdi plug on the harness a couple more times and plugged in the cdi and boom ran perfect.. still havent found where the short in the harness is but i havent had a problem since. I've got almost 12 hours rideiing time on this R now and havent had one issue.. The power sports place i took it to even told me i had to buy a new cdi and come to find out they were wrong it was a short the whole time.. I am now using the original cdi that came on the bike with no issues whats so ever..Good luck finding out whats wrong with the bike hope its somthing simple and cheap.. just remember if you buy a new cdi you wont be able to return it... Im stuck with two new cdi's now sittin here on my cpu desk waiting to find somone to to buy them..

Ask in the wanted section, likely one member may have a good CR250R IGN for sale or a like new OEM CDI...if you can't find a good used system, then look at the new CR250R kits.
