Im so sick and tired of my ESR 330 bolt on cylinder. I followed every instruction and every trick i have ever heard of to make this engine last.
This particular weekend was a fresh build, and ran amazingly during the break in process. The jetting was slightly on the rich side, bike ran amazingly for the 4 10 minute sessions i had on it beating it around my farm to break it in and monitor jetting / engine temp. It had so much power, and i was so ready to kill some 450's.
I was 3 laps into my practice session when it first seized. The temp on the engine read 215, but it fired right back up and ran great to the finish line. I checked the plug and it was a dark milky brown. But i still raised the needle one clip just in case the mid range was a little lean.
Warming it up on the line i noticed that i was a little rich. I decieded that the clip adjustment was a bad move, but would be fine for the first moto.
First moto, i made it 1/2 lap and was in third place, and it seized going over the jump. Temp was 220 or so when i looked at the gauge after i stopped.
Note, i was unable to get the engine over 185 degrees while beating on it in my yard on 95 degree days. So the seize is definitely from friction. Not lean.
The piston was set at .004 to ESR's recommended clearance. I baked the forged piston 5 times starting at 250 degrees and worked it up to 450 degrees, letting it cool between each temperature change it to harden the piston. Then rechecked my clearances again on the piston/sleeve. still perfect.
Thats the second piston this year and the 6th piston since i bought this cylinder last MAY (2010). I have no troubles with any other of my engines. My PRO X 310 runs flawlessly and i build it the same way.
It must be due to the lack of cooling ports around the exhaust port. Its the only thing i can think of that could be causing this. I will do a leak down test to confirm that nothing else is wrong with this engine.
Regardless this cylinder is going on ebay. Im so tired of getting drug off the track in the Open A class. Its flat out embarrassing. As if i dont catch enough flak as it is from the 450 guys for riding an R, i cant even finish 1 moto.
Sorry for the rant guys, im just a beat man now, i have went rounds with this jug and cannot make it work. Time to move on to another engine. Only problem is the wife is loosing patience with me spending money on engines.
Enjoy.
