BDT Motorsports wurks pipe ping pong ball?

So i got a beautiful Wurks exhaust pipe from a BDT Motorsports a few weeks ago. My bike was running fine before i installed the pipe, took 2 hours to install the new pipe and started her up. She sounded good but then the engine just stopped out of the blue. After that happened I could not get the engine started, I checked everything several times. Compression averaged 205psi, good strong sparks, new plugs, everything seals good, cleaned the carb 3 times, tried pull staring her, name the test and i preformed it.

So after being unable to start, I tore the engine apart and the piston was in okay shape same with the cylinder but i got it bored and got a new piston anyway. Got all new gaskets and took my time rebuilding the top end, and i had a friend help me to be sure it was built correctly. got the engine in the frame and spent a lot of time being sure all the connections were sealed up. Preformed a compression test and got 200 on the first test which i was satisfied. So I put the gas tank on and connected the fuel line, turned the fuel on. I went to kick it and it was doing what it was doing before the rebuild, it would not start but she was really really trying to start.

So i took the pipe off to reseal it with more RTV, when i took the pipe off there was smoke in the header so i tried blowing it out and the smoke came right back out at me. This puzzled me so i tried blowing through the stinger of the header piece, same thing happen it blew right back at me. So i then put some WD40 from the gallon can in the header piece to see if that would come out of the stinger, guess what it didn't come out. At this point I was pissed, something was clogging the brand new pipe. I had a conversation with someone that used to build 2 stroke pipe and he suggested that i use a water hose to push the clog out.

So i tried that right away and after 15 seconds of turning the hose on and building a lot of pressure in the stinger, i heard a pop and the sound of water flowing. I was excited the clog was out and wanted to see what was causing the problem.

This is what came out of the pipe.

I called the pipe builder i was talking to and he said the ball was most likely from the chromer. But it should have been checked for when it got back from chrome.

To end the story, this little ping pong like ball costed me a new piston, bore, several gaskets, several hours, and a major headache.

I will be calling BDT Motorsports today about this...

Yes i believe it is also from the chromer. I am happy it didn't cause any major damage but it did cost me a lot of money to redo the top end.

Yea that's why it surprised me when i tried unplugging the pipe and that ball came out.

I'm hoping so too, I will be calling when i get off work to find out. I sent them a email earlier today about the problem and also left Carlos a voicemail on Saturday about the clog.

X2...I already talked to Swanitalia (very sorry my friend); we will take care of him as we do every customer.

I think that ball was used to plug the inside of pipe during Chrome, that's a bummer that all that occurred just because of that little ball. At least it didn't cause more damage.....
S**T happens, we never have seen a ball inside the pipe from the Chrome Shop, this one is a first for us as well.

I talked to him yesterday, and sat? I think he is out of town. There sending my wurks pipe out tommorow? Im def going to check it before i mount it.
We were at the 250R races over the weekend; cell reception was not good or sometimes not at all.

All BDT WURKS pipes that are Chromed going forward will be fully inspected internally for any obstructions, balls, ect...can't trust the plater.

This is kind of a tuff one. I don't know what the out come will be. I'm not sure bdt is responsible for reimbursing your wrong diagnosis. But on your side you had no clue and the ball being in the pipe. And I dont think anyone would have been looking for a ping pong ball in there new pipe. Like I said I'm tied.

Thanks Carlos it was a good talk you today, great customer service and taking care of your customers. I hope the chrome shop figures out what happened and learns from their mistakes.

I must say, without the ball the pipe is incredible, great sound and a great powerband.

I checked everything, spark, fuel, changed plugs, checked stator, checked coil, checked cdi, checked grounds, changed the gas, put premix in the chamber, changed the air filter, cleaned the carb a few times, i had a post on the trx250r facebook group with over 200 comments and did everything everyone suggested. I now know every test that can be performed for starting, knowledge for the future.

The bike started when i first got the pipe, then it just stopped after idling for a minute. That probably lodged the ball plug deeper into the stinger tightly enough to not come loose.

The pipe was new, so it didn't occur to me that the plating shop could have left a plug in if they were doing a large run of pipes.

Kasey, the bike sounded fine when kicking over, you really couldn't tell there was something in the pipe until after i rebuilt it. When i kicked her over after i rebuilt her, you would hear the intake sucking in and then you would hear the exhaust sucking in at the connecting point of the header. I didn't know what the sound was at first but once i got the ball out it made more sense.

The plating company caused the problem and should take the blame, that why i'm sending Carlos the ball so he has it to show them. BDT Motorsport is taking care of me for this unfortunate event that has occurred, the customer service is great.

If you had a 106mm you would have more turbo then engine lol.

It's to seal the pipe so the inside is not plated.

Holy crap, theres a good way to burn down a motor...glad you caught itt that could've been catastrophic... Good luck

#33 ·
WHat are you talking about? The ball in the pipe would not hurt the motor at all? It would have only prevented it from starting like it did.

#35 ·
Lol, your motor would have to run long enough to get hot. The ball pluged the exhaust and shut the motor down.

#36 ·
Also i disagree that there is enough plastic there to cause any issue as far as pluggage.

A Nope no motor damage just a full rebuild trying to run down the issue, but that don't matter it's just hard earned money right .every body has plenty..it's just one of those things everybody gets a ping pong ball or 2 every now an then right..ps .Glad you got her going ..good luck
