Well basically I have a prolink swingarm for a 88/89 bike but I have an 87. I was just wondering if anyone has cut the solid piece so allow the motor to bolt through like its supposed to? Or am I better off selling it and looking for the right one? Thanks

You wouldn't want to do that. The better way is to just add some lower motor mounts like and aftermarket frame. Obviously it would be easiest with an 88 frame, but the lower motor mounts would be easiest since it wouldn't require getting new parts like footpegs and seat latch and misc other stuff that is different.

Im not sure I am following. Your saying just to weld a bracket underneath the existing one so the swingarm can bolt there, and then the motor can mount from the old spot?

Save yourself the trouble and get the 86-87 swingarm. The 88-89 did away with the integrated rear motor mount through the swingarm bolt, (which is why you would cut out the section), and added a bar acrross the rear section. If you use the 89 swinger you lose the rear mounts for the motor.

If you really wanted to do that you have to add motor mounts for the rear to your 87 frame.

I was just wondering if anyone had any pictures of motor mounts they fabbed up to use a newer swingarm on an older bike? Also wondering what your opinions on the headstay mount is? Ive heard to use it with out the bolt and with the bolt.

I thought about doing all that to my 86 but found out it be a lot easier and safe to just go with a aftermarket swinger that fits the frame. I've heard to run the head stay w.o the bolt on 310cc + motors. Or maybe I got that mixed up lol not sure. But deff run it even with out bolting head on to strengthen the frame will never hurt.. ;)

Sorry to bump an old thread but I feel this warrants it.
The short anser is YES it will work. But let me explain why you SHOULDN'T!
Start off with a fact: TRX's frames are infamous for weak spots thus gusset kits right? Right.

If you look at the front cross member bar on the 88/89 style swing arm you'll see it's a thick tube flush across the front where as the 86/87's swingarm bolt design used a long thin spacer where as 88/89 has the swing arm bolt go though the thick front cross member bar. By using the 88/89 swingarm with an 86/87 frame the swingarm will sit EXTREMELY close to the engine casings. If you have ANY play in your swingarm frame bolt through hole the swing arm will "shift/move" and start bumping into your engine cases and if severe enough you can wear a hole in the motor casings.
Not to mention the stock swing arm lengths were different lengths and the dog bones are 1" different as well. You'll automically know if you have the incorrect dog bone. Your quads ass end will sit higher. If you're into that 80's air shocks in the rear end of your car look that's cool, me nahhh went back to the correct size dog bone not to mention the correct swingarm ;)
I lost a set of casings due to this very issue. Let's face it, we're not exactly inclined to look inbetween the casings and swing arm. Hope this helps someone avoid the catastrophe I endured.

you can do it, put lower motor mounts in the frame. But, as already said, any wobble in the swingarm will wear a hole in the engine cases. Keep a close eye on the swingarm bearings and often. Most of the aftermarket frames have the motor mounts in the frame. Some is on the bottom and others is on top. My atc250r frame(custom made frame), has it on the bottom. If you can get one at a reasonable cost, get the correct shortened swingarm, you will be happier in the end. If you need to repair your frame, then it would make more sense to weld in the rear motor mount and use 88/89 swingarm. You have a 87 right? If it wasn't changed at some time, you have the correct linkage parts, but shock will be wrong length. As far as the linkages, there is 85 that doesn't fit with anything else and has a weak bottom bolt(nothing interchanges w/ 86 atc or 86-89 trx). Then you have 86 atc/trx, linkage parts are the same, even shock length(longest shock) is, difference is top shock mount on the atc is wider. 87 trx used a shorter shock and ~-1 dogbone, rest of linkage parts are the same as 86. 88/89 used the same linkage parts(including dogbone) as 87, but used a shorter shock than 87.
