I recently made my 1st purchase ever off another person, a ct350pv motor. I bought it last week through pay pal. It was shipped through fed-ex insured for 2000. I got the package yesterday and it had oil all over the package. The fed ex guy made a note of it and i opened the package to find oil everywhere, throttle cable snapped, and cases cracked and broke around the oil drain plug. I have no experience with this stuff and im looking for advice. can someone please help. here is link to pics of packaged motor, Pictures by jwags131 - Photobucket

Cases arent cheap, they also arent easy to replace. complete disassembly of the motor and you can lookup the parts for the case. As I recall they are around 300 each side and thats if you get a decent deal. You can try to make a claim through Fed Ex on the insurance if the seller will make an affidavit that it was not broken upon shipping. See what Fed Ex will do for you. Try to see if the packaging is damaged around where the motor is dmged.

That is not how you ship an engine. Who ever sent that like that is a jack ass. That motor should have been in a wooden box or hard plastic cooler with a lot of padding in it. Looks like they were trying to pocket more money by sending it as light.

what a dingle berry! yeah you ship engines in crates. that looks like damage from shipping. I will say that shipping companies should be WAY more careful with packages. However, when you send out an item you should assume the risk of the packaging and compensate accordingly. the good thing is that those cases appear to be repairable with some tig welding and machining on the gasket surfaces.

Finger pointing is not helping me at this point, whats done is done. People on this forum sell stuff to each other all the time for years and not one person has had any experience with fed-ex blunders or pay pal? And yet my 1st time ever purchasing a item from someone this happens, what are the odds of that? Any one with any experience at all with this or a story of their own that would help me calm down a little would be a godsend.

get in touch with FedEx and see what needs to be done to make claim. And/or contact the seller and see if they will refund your money and send it back. I have never had an experience like yours but have heard of others. You may not like to hear this but ones that I have heard had a hard time collecting the ins. due to (UPS) determining that packaging was not proper.

I appreciate all honesty. I did contact fed-ex right away and they said the shipper has to open the claim. So i contacted shipper and he went ahead and opened a claim for the motor. Fed-ex said that on monday somebody would be over to pick up the motor so they can check it out and see damage. Then they will decide if or what they will pay the shipper and send him a check for the damage. They also said they will send the motor back to the shipper when done with it. But this all scares the shi* out of me cause if fed-ex takes the motor and then decides not to pay for the damage, i am out 2000 i paid for the motor and the motor itself. What about pay pal? can anything be done through pay pal?

NEVER ship an engine with the drain plug in place; that is the weakest point and a sharp hit will crack the cases. The cases can be repaired, welded and made to function as new. Good center cases are rare and repairing is an option, it does get costly, however; sometimes it is worth the effort.

We double box & crate all the engines we ship with 2" padding all around. Plus without the drain plug in place; claims can be a nightmare...

I had this happen to me with a member on here with a bottom end. It was packaged pretty good but still just in a cardboard box with foam, clothes, sheets, etc. It was shipped usps. Basically I think someone picked it up and did not realize a box that small could way so much and dropped it. Luckily it only smashed the stator cover. So I snapped some pics and filed a claim with usps and they sent me a check within a few days. Hope it all works out for you. I did not have to get Paypal involved.

Wow man im reading this and feeling really sorry for ya man...good luck to you...

the problem i see .. when they inspect it,, they will say it was not properly packaged and the fault is the shipper.. even though they took his money for insurance,, and i will also say .. it was NOT packaged even remotely decent!! you can file a claim on paypal to protect your money. and hope the shipper didn't drain it out and has a zero balance. hopefully it all works out for you .... if it was me,, i would tie up the paypal before letting go of the motor,,,

The dude who sent that motor to you like that should be ashamed to even call himself a 250r guy! It looks like my little sister would have done a better job packaging it and shes only 10...Also the fact he lied about it having a cr ignition seems pretty shady.I dont like the fact that once ups takes the motor they will ship it back to him and also ship him the check...? So whats to say hell send you either back, hes already proved he's UN-trust worthy.

Pay pal thru a credit card is the safest way I have found. Drain plug is the weak area. I had a cr 500 motor shipped and it was in a double cardboard boxed with plenty of padding. Didn't leak a drop till I changed the oil and now it leaks. Also 5th gear was out and luckily the seller refunded enough money for me to find a deal on the guts to another cr500. I got to buy all the gaskets and did the tranny swap myself. Works great but still leaks:(

I had an issue a couple of years ago with FED EX, they lost an axle. The guy that shipped it sent me pics of how he shipped it and it looked about like your engine. I figure that the package disenegrated and the axle was laying in the corner of a warehouse somewhere. What I did first was contact the seller who filed the claim. Fed Ex payed him the insurance claim. At that point the seller stopped returning my calls. I filed a claim through PayPal and within a week they had refunded my money. About two days after I got the refund, I got a call from the seller who was pissed off because PayPal took the money right out of his bank account. As long as he still has an active Paypal account you should be able to get your money back. I don't use UPS or FedEx anymore due to all of the shipping issues I had with them. I started using USPS and IMO the prices are cheaper and also the items will get to their destination when they are supposed to.

Guys listen, when you get a package in & it looks like there could be damage, you can inspect it before that driver leaves. They may say your not allowed to, but theres no laws that says you cant. They are saying that so they can leave & go on to their delivery dutys.

If you want to inspect, & the driver says no, you tell them to go ahead & call their terminal to let dispatch know they cant leave from your delivery untill you have opened the package & inspected proper.
Worst thing you can do to that shipper, is hold their driver up from other deliverys & believe me, it will get the shipper attention.
Well how do you know, I can say because I delivered freight for a few years & a driver getting held up will have dispatch going crazy trying to get that driver back in the seat.
If damage is found, note it on the shippers delivery ticket & you could even refuse the package.
Neil
