I think I know the answer but figured I’d ask before cleaning the carb again but my 85 idle will raise higher than what I have it set at and if I shake the bike the idle will lower. I’m assuming it’s a sticking float or something causing it to lean out and raise the idle. Anything else that would cause that?

Are you sure that your idle adjustment circuit within your carb is working properly? A sticky float would only cause high idle if it was sticking closed and causing a lean condition as the bowl runs low (which is definitely possible). Does the idle climb slowly, is it constant, or is it a sudden change?

It's got a PJ flat slide 34 so it has the idle knob and it works as it should when adjusting so I assume it's ok and if I adjust the air screw the idle reacts as it should also. I store it at work in our heated shop so I don't need the choke or throttle to start it. It idles slightly high when cold but settles down quickly and the higher idle only happens once it's warm and I stop to shut it off. It'll idle up and if I rock it side to side the idle settles down. I put new OEM main seals in it a few months ago just because I didn't know when they'd been replaced last and I like working on it and it's got new reed gaskets and I checked all the bolts and clamps on intake in case there might be an air leak but I haven't done a leak down test.

I just picked up a used stator/flywheel for a good price and I didn’t think anything was wrong with the one I installed last year but this new one was in n better shape so I put it in this morning just to try it out. I didn’t think it would run any different but it starts better and the idle issue went away and revs cleaner. The only other thing I changed today was i swapped a B8EG plug for the BR9ES I had in it and didn’t touch anything else other than set the gap for the pickup/stator.

Yes, my cable has at least 1/4" play and no idle issues when turning the bars. It's just weird that after I swapped stators and switched back to a B8 plug the high idle went away. I just remembered yesterday when I went over the engine checking bolts a couple reed cage bolts snugged up a 1/4 turn so maybe it had an air leak?
