I have read a ton on this forum and many other sites on the kick back issues. I have an 86 R with a 295 top end. Bought it a year ago from AZ supposed to have been ready to go. Had a broke skirt on piston so it's sat until now. I'm on the 3rd cdi and no change. OEM, Rick's and dynatek. New engine top to bottom also. Just rebuilt entire thing. Checked connections, checked copper in the harness in multiple places also. New keihin carb, coil and stator checks out ok per manual specs. From what I've read it's leaning towards the cdi. Opinions greatly appreciated. Also if anyone has an OEM cdi for sale let me now in pm please. Would like to try another one just to satisfy myself. Thanks for your time and feedback.

well my friend you come to the right place there are a lot of amazing people on here with a ton of experience. I am sure they will start chiming in and some have a lot of parts.welcome to the forum.if i had an extra cdi, i would help you out.

Im unsure of what you are asking, is the R running ?
Are you worried about kick back from the kick starter ?
The chance of those 3 cdi's being bad is rare.

I am asking for thoughts. I go it started with the OEM cdi. Ran like crap. The other cdi boxes Didn't help. With my MX boots on, still puts my knee into the bars. I did a leak down for case gasket and any other air leak as well.

how is your jetting. just curious because i had the same issue with my 86 trike and had to go up a jet. just a thought as my trike did that and one of the guys on here chimed in and told me to try it. the color was good on a plug chop but guess it wasn't good enough.

Unfortunately only the OEM CDI works as it should; new or used it is 100#% better and the only current option for a 250R. Rick's CDI as well as all others, kick back, and don't perform as they should. Good News is BDT Motorsports has an order with the OEM for the HOnda CDI's, 86-87 & 88-89, Bad News we are still 6-8 weeks away from receiving the batch.

Flywheel or stator can cause this if something is wrong with the pickup or the wiring down by the flywheel. One bad flywheel & a few bad stators over the years so I would be most suspicious of the stator or wiring.

I believe I have, in a box. Stator Flywheel and CDI. Used ran my R until I upgraded.

Move the handle bars.... LOL

Off the wall Ideas, run like crap as it boggy or pshh threw intake ?
Plugged exhaust, var-met nest. What plug are you running ?

This should narrow it down,
