when coolant gets in your oil. but thats just one of many possibilities

If you have it out is there a way to look at it and tell

When you have a coolant leak from the weep hole...coolant can only get in the oil from the oil seal that is opposite.

If you pull the seal out you will need to buy a new one. It usually never seals up again.

As stated, if removed, it needs to be replaced. If it does not leak, then it should be fine...FYI; we replace 100% of the Mechanical Seals on all our engine rebuilds, regardless if it looks good or not, simply for piece of mind...you may want to do the same. Carlos

I just replaced mine earlier today after a full rebuild. It was leaking when I got it put back together. Pretty easy to do yourself. Costs about $35-40.
