my buddy has an r, and he uses R50 Klotz and i thought he was insane! he said alot of people use it and it actually runs damn good.
I thought it was weird because ive always used Spectra 31-1....
is 50-1 safe??? lol.

Klotz R50 is just the oil's name. Doesn't mean it is a 50:1 oil. I have used that stuff for over 20 years...good stuff. I mix mine at 32:1. I also use their Benol oil at 32:1.

HI , i ran Belray MC-1 witch in `85 was like state of the art @ 50;1 in my trike for 16yrs ! Finally one day at Glamis way the hell out where we should`nt have been the bottom end seized up ! But i never had a top-end failure ! The day it happened it was trying to warn me .....because it was slappin the gap shut on the plugs cause the crank bearing was going bad and i thought it was fouling them......i was wanting to ride and this thing was telling me to stop ! A good synthetic oil designed to be run @ 50;1 no problem and you`ll have less issues with fouled plugs ! I wish i could still find MC-1 but it`s getting hard and then C-14 @ $16+ a gallon is pricey but it`s the only way we fly around here !

I still have 4 bottles of MC1 unopend. Loved that stuff, but have switched to Maxima Castor 927 @ 28:1 now. I ran MC1 at 50:1 for years without issue then.

32/1 or 28/1...we like the 28/1 for the BB Sphynx, Puma and Saber engines, got to keep them 'kitty cats' lubed up....:D

50:1 is no issue with the right oil. I ran plenty of MX motors for an entire season without any wear or compressions issues. 20-30 hours no sweat at 50:1. Just depends on what you want.

50:1 can be safe, but not for all oils

Burns is right, there is nothing wrong with running oil at 50:1.

With that said, what is more important is to run the oil you are gonna use at the ratio that the oil manufacturer recommends. In other words, it's not a good idea to run an oil that is recommended for 32:1 use and run it at 50:1 instead. The oil has the proper concentration for 32:1, not 50:1 so it may be too diluted at that point. If the oil manufacturer recommends it be run at 50:1, then that means it was has the proper concentrations of formula and has been optimized to run at 50:1. One additional point to note, any time you are getting leaner on an oil: fuel ratio, you better make sure you are running a high quality oil, as you are relying on the actual quality of the oil to keep your engine safe and not the sheer quantity.

Im also at 32:1 with castor 927.. lower end is just to darn expensive to rebuild to thin the oil out more IMO. Also remember how much we always say OEM, OEM OEM. Well it says 20:1 on my OEM gas tank.. Now I realize the oils, fuel ect. are different than in the late 80's so I compromise and my comfort zone is 32:1.

I agree 100% you should only do what makes you confortable. No reason to worry about something all the time.

But when you understand whats going on inside the motor and what the oil is doing. I dont worry about the right oils at 50:1. That being said i run 28:1 now with a different oil. But to he honest, i would go back to 50:1 on any of my motors in a heart beat.

I never had issues wearing out rings at 50:1...haha... But yes more wont hurt. Like i said i currently run 28:1. Way to much oil in my opinion.

I run Amsoil Dominator at 32/1 with 93 octane nonethol gas and I was told by the Amsoil dealer that this oil is formulated to run at 50/1 and running it at anything other that and you are not getting the full potencial of the oil. From 85 til early 2000s I ran Klotz Supertecniplate at 32/1 and I fouled plugs left and right .Iv had no issue with plug fouling with amsoil.Back in the 80s my uncle ran his 2 83 and 85 250Rs on Amsoil 84/1 and he never had an issue with plugs or worn engines. He and his boys rode every weekend . Im sure if he raced it would have been a different story. The Amsoil he used was recommended to be ran at 100/1. I heard of a local Motorcycle shop that dealt in sleds and Can-Am bikes .That he ran the same amsoil as my uncle at 150/1 in a Can-Am dirtbike for racing and he never had an issue either. I never confirmed with him wether or not it was true.

ya its a mentality that people have. Because thats how it used to be so thats how it should be. Its like people changing there oil at 3000 miles in there cars because it makes them feel good. Which is fine. But its a waste of money and doesnt provide any actual benifit.
