Just curious as to how many of you guys still Run the 250R in the woods. I know they used to be the hottest bike back int he barry hawk days, now its a 450 world. I know a few guys that still run the R, and im in the process of planning a Xc build on my 86.

Whats the best setup, how are you guys doing again the thumpers?

Im planning on swapping my 86 bottom end for 88 longrod, low port and pipe, not sure on suspension yet, flexx bars, antivibe , stabalizer all that.

Whats the best gearing w/ 20" and low pipe and port? Any other pointers you guys can give me to get me headed in the right direction on this build will be much appreciated. It will probably be at least a year before its finished but it will be fun, and worth it :p

glad to see you over here mindcrime.
Thanks! :) I was here previously before the revamp with LOTS of XC mods/posts, but they were lost in the transition.

Yep, the ole TwoFiddyR is STILL a force to be reckoned with and right near bullet proof if one knows how to build them. It's still amazing to me ALL THE TECHNOLOGY that goes into the four strokes, just to get them to put out what a simple 250cc two stroke will, yet the four strokes keep grenading. ;)

BTW, even with that much of a curvature (20 degrees), you wouldn't necessarily know that I had a problem. I hide it pretty well, and my posture or my walk doesn't reflect my spinal issues(---Chronic Pain sucks, BTW):

That's ME taken at Christmas last year, if any of you ever wondered what I look like. LOL!!! ;)

I anticipate this thread turning into a mustache contest.

Not sure if ill be able to make it to lorettas it would be awesome if i can make the time to get down there though Ive never been there. If i do it probably wont be w/ the R Its going to be awhile before she's finished im going to take my time and hopefully build it right so it can stay "together" for awhile lol.

Mindcrime thanks for the tips and good luck w/ the recovery. Hopefully all goes well and you can get back to doing what you love in the future.

Basically what i want to start on first is the motor and get it underway while i pick up bolt on parts here and there. then hopefully if all goes right it will kinda all come together all at once w/ no hangups.

So now that a few reputable and experiend Xc R builders are in here. What will be the best bang for the buck motor. From what ive read/heard im highly considering the 87+oem crank, cr gasket or gasket mod, low/mid port w/ matching pipe.

What im debating or confused on is which topend to go with? Will my 86 topend w/ a spacer be good or would it be better to opt for the 87 cylinder aswell? Id like good lowend-mid power but still decent topend and make it as easy to ride as possible to. What about 265 or 310? too much for the woods pro's cons?

Im kinda on a limited budget for this build i want the best relaibility out of anything for this motor though.

thanks Guys

And i agree we lost alot of info from the old site. I used to sit up all night and read endless posts on there lol

The later model piston does not require the 5mm spacer plate, and thus decreases the crankcase volume and increases the transfers' velocity, which gives you better throttle response, as compared to using the early '86 piston and a 5mm spacer plate.

A Rad Valve is a prerequisite (I use a Rad-02A with a spacer plate for use with my 38mm A.S.), and a 36mm or MAX 38mm Air Striker carb gets the nod, and my favorite pipe is the Paul Turner ('03 or newer) Midrange Race Pipe (I still own a P.T. Type 6, but I never use it. ;) ). Also a ESR or Pro Design O-ringed head is a great addition---it adds cooling effenciency as well. You can tune the compression (I have a 23cc dome for 180 psi and 93 pump fuel, and a 20cc, and 18 cc dome, both for straight 110 octane and 210 and 230 psi respectively).

BTW, I'd personally use the ATC gasket, since the CR gaskets are more prone to LEAK!!! ALSO, replace your radiator cap!!! It's cheap insurance against boil overs. If memory serves, the KX500 cap fits our TRXs AND holds 14 psi of rad pressure over the TRXs' 12 psi. Just some more insurance. Don't ask me for the KX500 part number, I've already looked for it. :(

Anymore questions, just ask.

houser isn't making any 250r stuff anymore and they liquidated their inventory on ebay(pretty cheap to). i'd recommend just getting standard travel arms since they give you more ground clearance, even stay with your stock arms if they're in good shape. everyone is fast in the open but the race is won in the tight stuff. that gives you more cash for a good set of front shocks. the stock rear shock is a good piece and can be revalved so i'd save some cash there and stick with it.

xc...machine protection is a big issue IMO ..skids bumpers etc..sometimes is difference between finishing a race or not !
bet most on here have seen this old school rear swingarm guard ...very effective in woods racing pile ups .. & I will sell it if anyone wants it

Mindcrime thanks for the tips. I wasnt aware i could use my 86 cylinder w/out the plate thats good to know.

Id like to keep it on pump gas if i can for the wallets sake since i hope to put alot of hours on it once its finished (thats what we build em for right :D ) So 23cc dome would be my limit??

On the carb is there much noticable difference in the 36-38 mm? Throttle response?

pimpt thanks for that part # ill most likely pick one of these up i plan on using the oem radiator at least for awhile unless i can find a nice deal on a oversized really didnt plan it in the budget. Im sure the cap on mine is the stocker from 86 lol so it could use updated for peace of mind if nothing else.

rook thanks for the ebay heads up. If i come across some deals ill definately pick up some parts to put up on the shelf so theyre ready. I want to focus on the motor primarily for now. Wonder why houser quit the R parts you'd think they still sell enough to keep it in production Still alot of R's out there and always parts getting wadded up lol, and new builds comi9ng about everyday.

2 Rs i agree protection is one of the most important things to consider in woods racing. I definatley plan on full armor at minimum. Thats the first thing i did to my raptor when i brought it home from the dealer. For the price of skids compared to engine cases, rotors, sprockets swinger etc Well worth it.

Thanks again guys keep the info coming its much appreciated. Im trying to gather as much info on the best setup as i can so i can minimize the doubling back and changing parts out as much as possible lol.

If you run more than a 67mm bore, you might need a 24cc dome ("IF" your head is O-RINGED) to keep it in the 180-185 psi static compression.

There IS a difference in throttle response between the 36 and 38mm carbs, BUT with the 38mm PWK Air Striker is an almost have your cake and eat it too.

BTW, IMHO, THE ONLY swingarm SKIDPLATE is a Protect Fabrications Stainless Steel skidplate.
Rocks DIG into an Aluminum skid, and actually SLOWS you down, where the Stainless skidplates just skip and slide over the rocks.

what year swinger does that rear bumper fit dave?

I beleive it does fit the 86/87 swingarm ,since it came with a 87 I had picked up a few years ago .. & I will check on Mrs 2R's 86 stock swingarm if your interested in it ..to be sure ..so let me know if ya want me to check it out

Ok finally getting some time and spare $$ to get this project started. I rode the bike yesterday. For some reason i decided to go out and kick it just for the hell of it. It fired right up 2nd kick after sitting for at least 4 or 5 months  So i slapped the plastics on and threw the wife on my raptor and went to the local slag pits. It ran great. I dont know why i waited so long and let it sit. Figured i might as well ride it while I gather parts up for the build.

Im going to grab plastics first off and a spare motor after that to start the build. That way i have a backup motor and can still ride on my stocker while im building the other.

For plastics what would you guys recommend? Id like to get black. I like the look of race cuts, but for Xc im going to need some fender. Is there an inbetween? Like somewhat smaller front fenders, but not quite race cuts?

i just trimmed mine a little they still cover well and i think they look better

I bought brand new maier front and rear full fenders awhile back and I really like em. the front fenders do a pretty good job at keeping you somewhat clean from spray off the tires, as long as they dont stick out to much wider than stock. last weekend we went riding and it had rained most of the day before so there was water puddles all over the place. I was busting em' wide open lol cause it was like a perfect day of riding and my goggles stayed fairly clean for a little while. I figured out that theres certain speeds and ways to hit mud and water holes and not get covered up from the splash.

I rode mine (still has old beat up oems on it) yesterday. It was pretty muddy. The fenders kept alot of it off of me, Compared to the 450's plastic. Id def. like to stay full fender if i can find a nice set. Ive seen some decent deals on blems on ebay.

Im going to try and buy the carb and reeds this week if i can. I found a ok deal locally on a longrod motor ill probably get. I plan on building a fresh motor out of my current 86, but will be nice to have a spare and i can ride it while the other ones getting built B)

Ive seen some deals on pwk 36 and 38mm on ebay. Some dont say airstryker?? Is it the same carb or is there 2 different models? Whats the difference between Reeds? Rad valve? Vforce??
Which do i want for good lowend throttle response?
