hey guys was wondering how hard it is to replace the counter shaft on a 86 250r. There is one for sale buy seller says the sproket bolt is broke so the counter shaft needs replacement? What does this mean any help

1986 Honda TRX250R QUAD. Very clean for a twenty two year old bike, UNFORTUNATELY IT HAS A BROKEN SPROCKET BOLT, so it needs a new counter shaft and sprocket bolt. Honda part 23221-HB9-770 and 90103-426-000 ($85.78 for both from Service Honda dot com). Also, leaks a couple drips over long periods of time and has a small exhaust leak, but I have the replacement o-ring and springs. Otherwise, it starts upon the first couple kicks. This thing is a beast. Two-Stroke power, don’t let the engine size fool you. It will easily give a TRX450r or other newer 4-strokes a run for the money. Newer Aluminum rims, plastics, decals. Awesome suspension. I am selling because I have too many projects and not enough time. California DMV title is clean. Would definitely be a good race quad. Go buy a new TRX450r for seven thousand or you fix the broken sprocket bolt and have one mean desert bike for a third of the price. Paypal only. LOCAL PICK UP ONLY! I will not ship! Must be picked up with seven days of auction ending. Quad sold as-is. Quad is listed locally, so I reserve the right to end the auction early.

from what i read from the ad it is the counter shaft in the tranny which mean the whole engine has to be disassembled and the tranny broken down. not hard to do with a manual for the first time go at it. but ask the guy who is selling it if that is the shaft in the tranny. i can't get service hondas to work on my mac.
very well written ad...almost verges on overrated ,...maybe ?
but BTW if some work or maintenace/repair work scares ya ...
maybe the 250R is not the bike for you ..
since any R you bought would be used at this point

Depending on how bad it is and how bad it has been messed with, he might not be able to get it out. In other words, If it could have been gotten out, it would have been by now I'm sure! Which means, a case split is probably the only fix.

I didn't see a price in the listing but depending on how reasonable it is, it might not be a bad idea to buy it and tear it down if the price is right, or if you can haggle him down. All I am saying is that I paid 7000+ a couple years ago for my old Drag Banshee only to have it throw a crank bearing 2 days after I got it. Sometimes people lie and things aren't as reliable as they seem in the pictures, spending more money doesn't necessarily mean it will last any longer. If you can get a good deal, buy it and rebuild it or have someone rebuild it the way you want it. That way you know all the bearings, gaskets, seals, rings are fresh so that you aren't spending triple the money when a five year old wrist pin bearing goes "On that 'fresh' motor you just bought", as an example. Just my opinion.

Very well put teddy.. Thanks for the reality check. He wants 2250 for it. It's on evilbay if you want more details. I wonder how much a complete rebuild kit runs these days. I'm also looking at a 87 on craigslist for 2500. Here's the ad for it tell me what you think if you don't mind."This is a very clean, well cared for bike. I'd just try checking around eBay and other R/Honda forums, in addition to this one. I wouldn't worry about the location of a certain bike, as long it is a good deal/good bike. I have used www.haulbikes.com in the past to ship my bikes from coast to coast, they take very good care of my babies and are very reasonable!

what about some near by states? if you have to drive 4-5 hours but can save $500 seems worth it to me. full aftermarket quad with extra frame and parts for $4000 in NY http://trx250r.net/trx250rforums/index.php%20

The east coast is definitely the RIGHT and BETTER coast in terms of supply and demand for 250r's. I had to trade a mint low hr limited edition 04 660 raptor plus $1800 in 2005 for my current JP/Axis/CT 350r. And I waited and paid $7300 OTD for that yamaha.
Although the value of any quad is only relative and dependent on the need and desire of the buyer to own it regardless of what type of repairs it would still require, I am only glad that I have not the need to do anyhting to the motor yet since then . BTW I ride the dunes/desert all year round here in Cali .

I broke the bolt off in my countershaft about 2 years ago. bought one of those bolt extractor kits and it broke too, so I had to change it. If you know what you are doing it can be done in a day or two, but you have to split the cases and take the transmission apart to swap all the gears over from the old shaft to the new one. and spliting the cases means new gaskets for the entire motor, and I always change the main bearings and seals when i split the motor. so maybe $200 in parts, but if you have a shop do it, the labor could wind up being over $1000.
if you just wanted to ride it now, you can weld the sprocket to the shaft. it will work for awhile...
