I used an 06 swing arm with 06 rear linkage. there is 3 mounting holes for the rear linkage. The 2 holes on the ends of the linkage is the only ones that are to be used. On the linkage peice there 2 holes that are closer together. That end of the linkage is what You want to articulate towards the rear of the swingarm . You have to put this peice in this way. Use the r dog bone front linkage. eliminate the mounting hole in the mid section. With the 450 linkage you will need to press out 1 bearing only the one that will mount to the dog bone and shock and use the r bearing sleave and 250r bolt. I modified all my bolts except rear with grease fittings. On the rear mount 06 swing arm to linkage use stock 06 bearing and bolt. The shock the dog bone and the fornt of the 450 linkage will all bolt togther in the same spot forget there is even a middle hole you do not even use it. Note you will have to make and apply spacers in some ob the connecting areas i have not done this yet. As you can see i am still into the build. Your ride hight will be 5/8 on an inch lower. your swing arm will have full travel. To get this calculated i had my OEM swing arm on the bike. I measured in multiple spots and documented various measurements. Includeing shock angle and pitch. Measured all componets involved. With a rider on the seat i remeasured every possable angle. Including shock angle and pitch as well as swing arm travel. I then applied the 450 swing arm with all componets. This was no easy task. I walked away from this time and again. There was always something that did not add up. Testing over asnd over This was the best configeration i came up with. When i felt that this was correct i bolted it together. And it feals right. Now The shock is at a different angle and the ride height is 5/8 inch lower. Not throughing anybody under the bus. I spoke with a few reputable shock rebuilders. 1 st response (why thats nonsense there are so many aftermarket parts why would you even swap out a proven winner). 2 nd response ( since you have changed the angle of the shock there is no way you will get that bike to performe as it was intended to you are wasting your time). 3 rd response ( realy thats an inovating way to look at that give me all your specs send in your shocks if you set it up and it needs tweaking its not a problem just minimal charge). The pictures i have posted in my opinion the correct configeration. This is a mock up to show how i assembled components. Note all of my bearings are not installed. I had just placed bolts in to hold pieces together. All of these components have been polished by Jet Polishing 978 227 8014. My shock is being revalved by B-line Control. 651 257 0828 My shock is OEM all componets polished and shock tube was chromed all spanner nuts were chromed. Classic Components. Look these venders up awesome to work with. Tell them Douglas sent you.
Now if any one comes up with a better configeration keep me in the loop

yeah, I never got very involved in my swap, just got it working and rode it.

never tried using different linkages or mixing 250r and 450r parts but it seems the way you did it would eliminate the linkage hitting the frame (which was my problem)

I ran 05 linkage backwards (worked best for ride height)

I went with an aftermarket setup now, the 450 was just temporary until I could drop a couple grand on a brand new rear end setup

I know what you mean though about shock companies, Works pretty much told me to stop wasting my time and just use 250r parts

Douglas, how much difference was there between the 06 450r rear link and the 86 250r rear link as far as length? Was it so much that the 86 250r rear link couldn't be used?

The problem I noticed was the location where the linkage mounts to the swingarm when you compare the 250R and the 450R swingarms. The 450R swingarm location is closer to the bearing carrier, about an inch, compared to the 250R.

So, is the correct way to run this setup is with the 06 linkage and an 05 swingarm?

Joe, if I am understanding your correctly, the 450r rear link is an inch longer than the 250r rear link. Is this correct?
Joe, how does the wide of the 250r rear link compare to the width of the 450r length, where it bolts to the swingarm? What is the difference between them? Or is it just the bolt size on the swingarm that is different?

Douglas, the ride height and shock angle your spoke of, I assume, is due to the shock being angled more towards the rear (towards the swingarm more). Is this correct?

When I ge home i'll take a pic to compare the linkages. The part im worried about is, will it be as good as the R stock setup? Key is to just bolt and go so no one has to have the rear shock worked to make it work. I'm not saying we shouldnt press forward with this but the key is to be as good or better than what we have. All in all great work and resparked my intrest once again!! Anyone in good with GT thunder? Maybe run this past him to come up with something foir his current build.

I agree with you completely. Here is my thinking at the moment. If all we need is a special length rear dog bone to make this work, then I could have some made from a local machine shop. Or perhaps there is a dog bone off of another atv that may already be the right length. If the dog bone widths are the same, then maybe your could just use a durablue adjustable dogbone. Just some thoughts at the moment.

I can't speak for th 05 linkage or swing arm. I used an 06 when i complete my build i will give a ride report. Only thing is. this is my first R i have only rode 2 R 's in my life they were both stock. When i rode my the 2nd R thats when i knew i wanted one. So heres this my build is with 06 swing arm axle rotor caliper. 06 front spindles hubs rotors calipers. 08 front shocks. OEM rear shock. all shocks are being revalved. engine is 370 power valve stroker. complete rebuild of all components. Polished, chromed and powder coating . So every stage is a money pit. Still in the hunt for redoing my seat has to be a hump. Plastics will be all new. Chain sprockets brake lines and grab bars. Almost there just need more $$$$$$$$ Looking at the end of June for compleation. Here's The difference on the swing arm lenghts. 87 r is 19 1/2 inches. 06 450 is 18 1/2. 1 inch shorter

It was a big can though. I hope that its helps. I chased this application for a year and never got a 100 % answer. Now keep in mind i still have not rode ths modification. I researched it and only shop tested it. So i'm sure someone will have this assembled before me with a field test. If you do and its you keep us all posted.

the stock rear shock is very forgiving. I never revalved mine and i would say its smoother ride than stock

Can someone give me the dimension from center of front swingarm mount hole to center of swingarm dog bone mount hole for the 450r swingarm? I think I have decided to draw both up in CAD and see what needs to happen for both linkage designs to converge at the same locations. I can measure all me 86 model parts, but I don't have the measurements on the 450 parts. I do know that the 450 swingarm length is 18.5". If someone can get me that other dimension, that would really help.
