So here is the deal....

I bought an 88 250r a few months ago. I just realized that the stock cylinder sais 85 on the sleave. So now im starting to wonder if the motor is an 85 atc motor with a 5 speed trans (didnt check because i just figured it was an 88 and im clueless) . The engine is at my builders shop in pieces so i will not be able to talk to them until monday. It just worries me because I am having a 4 mm sphinx drag ported on alky built. If it is a 5 speed motor would that be a huge mistake to dump all the money into it. I have a few banshees so im new to the 250r stuff. The rear motor mounts dont seem to work with the 88 frame that i have, there is only one rear motor mount on my frame. Is there a bracket that is used to connect the two mounts together on the motor like on the 86 and 87 models. I know all dumb questions but i bought this bike in a box so im in the dark on it....

85 is 6 speed and the #s on the case would help determine what year you have..

I had an 85 atc years back that i did a bunch of work too. That motor was only a 5 speed trans. So now im begginning to wonder if someone had a diferent trans in that motor or if the 6 gear was taken out. Alright thanks for the help

From 85-89 all R motors were 6 speed and looked like the same motor

As stated; all 85 to 89 engines for the 250R are 6 speed trans. The cases are all the same excpet for minor details and all work on all frames the same from 85 to 89. Check your engine S/N's to see if it an 85 or 86 ATC250R engine verses an 86 TRX250R...
