So I have had this 86 trx for awhile now(more of a Atc guy)
But it has gave me nothing but problems. I have no more then and hour ride time total on it and probably 50+ hours working on it

BUT here are the problems now.
1 the clutch is all brand new besides the basket. (it's the 89 upgrade.) the clutch didn't work at first and I thought it was just the plates sticking. Now they work. BUT only when it's cold????? Wtf. Once it's hot it doesn't work at all.

2 the head bolts come unscrewed all the time? And yes I torqued them down to what the manual said.

3. The throttle randomly sticks about quarter throttle, and the kill switch stops working right when that happens!? But the kill switch works perfectly any other time???
THIS MOTOR IS CURSED.

1. Is the clutch basket notched? Check the install again and be sure everything is installed correctly. What kind of tranny oil are you running? Nothing with moly...and sometimes synthetics can be too good for wet clutch's. Also, check to be sure the cable is good and is adjusted properly.

2.Got me on that one. I would guess some thread lock but I do not have the manual in front of me. One of the more experienced people will answer this

3. If it were me I would pull the carb, the throttle, and the cable and go through it all with a fine tooth comb. Make sure all of it is in perfect order before installing it. Also, check the cable routing. Sometimes the slightest bend can make a huge difference. Not sure what the connection is between your throttle and kill switch. I would go through the entire electrical system with a meter and a manual and be sure it is in spec

On here to Richard? Really. GTFO. I've had two other people work on it one being a member here and on .org. Not gonna say who Becuase he has a good reputation. An he to said he had no idea why this was happening. But I've told you this many times. Quit posting on my threads if your gonna start stuff. You obviously know what your saying, but you never try to help. Just aggravate me.

Im gonna go with your thumb throttle is bad I had one years ago that would stick whenever you did nt want it too . I think i still have sitting somewhere if there is alot of slop in stuff inside where your cable goes its worn out it happens. good luck.

Leak down test?
Coolant Pressure test?

thumb throttle arm pivot bushing warn and wiggle?
throttle cable new? Spring on top of slide in good condition?
slide not warn down or have rubbed off chrome?

Clutch sounds like install, or wrong pressure plate. when you did the 89 upgrade what all did you change?
also inspect the clutch actuator arm maybe its hanging up from excessive wear.

kill switch problem likely means the revving problem is due to an airleak as killing spark doesn't help.

Head bolts coming loose are more than likely detonation backing them off and like moto says the kill is not working because of the lean condition basicly you are getting the plug ground strap so hot it keeps lighting off the next compression stroke.

And again I agree that your clutch issues are you have a mismatch of parts or installed wrong.

first of all this this can't happen,, if it works fine cold and not when hot,,, the dimensions don't change enough thousandths to make it not work,, and when you say it doesn't work at all???? what ,, won't engage or won't disengage? the 250r is the simplest of things to work on,, you say its all new ,,whats all new inner hub?outer hub? plates?springs? you say 89 do you have the right inner and outer hub? the right rod that is the proper length ? ,, its simple mechanics,,, there is nothing hard about a clutch... did you buy it as a kit or piece a bunch of mismatched parts together??? first it didn't work,, then it did ,,, now only works cold???? NONE of this makes sense!!! NOTHING changes that dramiticly when it gets hot!!!! thats why i ride you all the time YOU NEVER THINK ABOUT WHAT YOU SAY!!! AND NEVER GIVE GOOD INFORMATION ABOUT THE PROBLEM!

the kill switch quits when the throttle sticks???? REALLY!!! do you know the difference between an extremely lean condition and a throttle sticking,, they are two completely different situations,,, the motor reatcs completely different ,,, properly jetted motor with a stuck throttle will maintain the same rpm,, whereas a LEAN motor will get a run on knocknig which will loosen up your head nuts! and be so hot the kill switch won't work,,,,, all seem to be related to the fact you don't know what LEAN SOUNDS LIKE..... check the plug and you will see its lean not black,,,,,

Dont feel bad bro ive had mine a little over a yr and prolly only have 6hrs riding on it every time i crank it something breaks and causes weeks or months of no riding

Been riding/racing my R now for 5 years without any real problems. 100 hours of riding time and the only thing I had to replace on the 431 Puma was the crank tins defective from Hotrods.

When a bike sits around for years without any maintenance it is gonna need all kinds of work. I and a few others on here take the bike completely apart and go through everything. After replacing old carbs and rusty bearings the bike runs like a dream.

^^^ Agreed!

I am bringing my '85 ATC 250R that I bought brand new back then back to life after it sat for 20 something years. I have had to address EVERY single last part on it and replace oh so many parts to be sure it lights up when I am done. I have made sure everything is in spec and most of it would not be possible without the manual. Gotta take your time and do it like a pro.

You just can't get around that. If your going to cut corners you may as well not even bother.

sounds like quite a few parts are worn out of tolerance. get your manual out and some micrometers and calipers and measure all parts and make a chart of the data. a bunch of lil things out of spec will wreak havoc on any machine. also, make sure everything is clean as humanly possible to get precise measurements. a couple thousands of an inch out of tolerance on a few parts will put a hurtin on performance.

zac is an attention whore from 3wheeler.org.and other places. very little of what he posts makes any sense to a real mechanic with skillz!!! he must be bored with nothing to do or no responses from his crap elsewhere......................................................................
