Hello guys, well i just picked up an 86R from my girls dad. this thing hasnt been touched in about 13 years. So now i would like to get it running and do some much needed maintenance. I have taken the carb apart to clean it up, plus I checked compression in it and checked out at 180. So it seems to be OK, it does have an aftermarket pipe and I plan on running an eliminator intake. No engine work has been done as far as I can see. The reeds looked in good shape, but I will be replacing them. Also I ordered a petcock rebuild kit due to some leaking I noticed. With all that said, here are my questions,

What should I set my start off point for jetting with the mods mentioned? I'll be riding from sea level to 700ft.

Would running a 30:1 mix be good?

And anyother things I should look out for?

Thanks guys for all the info I've learned so far and for what I'm about to learn!
And here's some pics of the ride :)

Stock carb? Can't offer jetting help without that info.
I run a mix of 32:1

thanks, sw for me, off of gosford. i have seen some local people on here while i was lurking. hopefully i can get some great info from them.

do a leak down test on the cylinder and pressure test the coolant system before you go jetting too much

you can go up a few sizes on the main jet just to be safe

pop the stator cover off and look for corrosion, then check the ignition ground to the frame off the coil.

check the rear axle nut is tight and also touch every bolt on the bike make sure its tight.

fuel mix i wouldnt go more then 32:1 i run 40:1 but i run synthetic oil

Got it! Quick question, how do i perform a leak down test and test the coolant system?
And looks like 32:1 is the way to go as far as mix. Im really cant wait to get this thing running. I have always wanted to get this R from him, but would never budge. Once i get this one running, he has an 87R still that is in pieces that i would have to put together.

Motofool covered most of it id say. Wthout tearing anything down and physically looking at the internals the leakdown test is the way to go. Or, if it were me, id mix up fuel, check to see if it has spark, and crank that bitch up! Haha. Definitely pull off stator cover and look for any rust or corrosion on ths flywheel or magneeto. Good luck!

alright, so I'm Gonna go out today and buy all the goodies for a leakdown test. Ill check everything under the stator cover also. I did download the service manual,so i should be able to check all that stuff. Other than that, im still wondering what range of jets i should order. im thinking 152-160 for main and 50-55 for pilot.

Welcome....!

If you are going to stick with the stock carb, I would get 50-52 Pilots and 152-165 Mains...get a different needles like DGH, and CEL or CEJ. In the future consider up-grading to a Keihin 38-39MM and a better pipe & reeds. Least expensive up-grades that will yield a performance gain.

32/1 is a good Pre-mix ratio...

thanks for the info carlos. also i have been checking out your site for some goodies. my plan eventually will be to put in a 310 or 330 with a trx5 pipe and all the necessary goodies to make it run like a beast. but for now i just want to bring it back to life. thanks guys for all the help. im still here at work, but once i get off i will be buying the stuff for the leakdown test kit. also, what reeds would you guys recommend? this thing has stock reeds but seem to not be making a good contact to the cage. thanks again guys.
