Hi guys,

I aquired this gem through a trade for a KFX450R back about a year ago. I rode it a few times and then lost spark, so I put it on the back burner for a while to ride my 450r.

Now I have a CR Ignition and timing plate to throw on, and I'm looking for more power at the same time while I have it in my shop.

My question is: Since when I first posted it there was some contreversy on what year it actually was (it says '86 on the ownership), I would like to know exactly what I'm working with. I'm still pretty new to the 250r world, I would like to know what frame I have, what motor I have and maybe even what pipe I have since I've never seen another one like it.

I'm open for suggestions on a route to take for building this too, right now its a 255CC (i think, never opened it up) but my compression is at 150 so I think I'm loosing compression too. Oh well, time to build a 4-stroke killer :)

How it sits now..

Any Ideas guys? I think somebody said the frame was an '87.. I'm thinking I have an '86 engine..

Thanks for the replies guys. The guy re-welded a VIN tag onto the frame (visible under the left rear fender..) Which is why I'm kind of at a loss here, haha.

I don't know what he did or didn't do to it

Front eng mount area is 87-89, Grab bar mounts are 88-89 or a modded ?, With my eyes I can't tell what the peg mount is in those pics. You could post some more pics of your footpeg mount area, under the front hood like the pic above and frome the rear of the swingarm area to get more help. Based on your paperwork it is proably an 86 that has just had the frame replaced at one time and someone just welded the vin tag from the orig 86 frame on it to keep the title paper trail going. It is just a mut now, and there is nothing wrong with that. When you buy anything that will use the peg or grab bar mounts you will just need to confirm fit before ordering. You will not have a problem with the help on here.

I'll get those pictures as soon as I can. I'm hoping that the only thing that was changed was the frame.. would make it easier to start modding.

Anybody have any idea on the pipe? Should I sell it and buy one thaty I'd know more about it?

I want to build a ~295CC+ bike, I have a brand new long rod I THINK, it might even be a short rod, I forget it was given to me buy an old 250r guy in a box of parts. Should I go Long rod with a spacer plate? This is going to be a long term project I think since I race and maintain my 450 99.9% of my time and that takes most of my funds

If you have a vin # as stated from redneck052 the you have either a 88-89 frame and the guy welded another tag on the back, if you only have the tab vin # then your frame is either an 86-87 and you cases are gray as well so I'm thinking 87 but I am not sure on the colors of the 86 cases, hope this helps

you have a 1987 frame.

1. 87-89 lower motor mounts are flat. 86 was bent like an "L"
2. front lower mount is 87-89 bent metal mount. only 86 had the molded sloid metal mounts.
3. the inlet for your radiator has a turn to it. 88-89 radiators are straight.
4. i can point out more things but this microsoft paint thing is a pain.

take some closer pics of the motor hard to see if you have a spacer under the cylinder or not.

what kind of riding and goal of the build would help us direct you for motor work, also budget.

the pipe is custom coned, not too many people doing it that way it could be a LED pipe a CPI pipe or someone elses really hard to say with no markings.

3. the inlet for your radiator has a turn to it. 88-89 radiators are straight.

all that tells you is that its a 87/86 radiator.... I believe this is probably a 88 or 89 style replacement frame on an 86 250R, so the motor, radiator, and etc. are from the 86. Honda did sell replacement frames for awhile in the 90s right? I bet all years superceded to the 89 style frame and it would have not had a VIN number on it.

Is there an curved bar about 2-3" above the swingarm pivot bolt running from one side of the quad to the other? That is how they did the rear engine mounts on the 88-89 style frame
Are the footpegs bolted on? Those 2 should help you figure out what you have

The rear engine mount and foot pegs are the easiest way to tell. If you have a curved bar similar to this ~ 88-89 if ur footpeg area is flat 86-87 if the footpeg area has thing sticking out so u can mount nerfs 88-89

I will take some more pictures, hopefully tonight.

Thanks again for the responses.

As for my goal engine wise.. I want a 45+ HP MX engine. Don't really know on a budget as it's still on the back burner. I'd like to throw like 5-600 bucks at a top end (porting/cyl. Included) I think I have a 38mm carb, V-forve reeds.. Should I keep the pipe or go for something with better known properties?

I'd say its an 88-89 frame. The front bumper top mount is one solid tube while 86-87 had two seperate tubes, the frame is missing two support pieces next to the nerf bars that 86-87 had, the foot peg brackets on 86-87 were bolted on with two bolts that went up the frame a couple inches. A dead give away is to look how the rear engine mount & swing arm is bolted on. The 86-87 the swing arm & rear engine mount shared the same bolt, where the 88-89 the swing arm mount was one solid piece & the rear engine mount had its own bracket welded across the frame above the swing arm (kinda looks like an "S" tube) that is really close to the spring of the rear shock.

It probably doesnt have the original radiator so ya cant really go by that.

5-600bucks and ur goal is 45+hp? Dont get a stroker crank then cause the porting alone will cost what ur looking to spend. Sell that 450 and use thr money to build ur R!

ride the pipe and see if you like it, it can be changed later

if you do a +4mm stroker crank (250$) pro port 450, bore n piston figure 200, gaskets n bearings 200, and thats putting it together yourself just FYI so you understand what your in for for a full rebuild.

Here are some things that the 86-87 frame had that are different than the 88-89 frame:

Foot pegs were bolted on

Rear swing arm & motor mount shared the same bolt (dead give away)

Four small tubes where the front bumper bolts up (88-89 has two tubes, one across the top & one across the bottom)

Extra piece welded in behind the front a-arms

Motofool hit the nail on the head. Not saying u can achieve 45+hp for 5-600$ but i just dont see it
