I ride the Oregon dunes once a year. Usually ride for two days on the weekend after dunefest. It is 700 miles away from home for us. We might go a little later this year. Maybe september. Awesome fun dunes.

It should be okay in July. It rains a lot there, so it'll be a crap shoot on that. If you are already going, its worth it to try. It's a lot of fun there. You'll love dragging up banshee hill. Winchester Bay is my favorite. The far south end of Coos Bay is fun too. It's called Horsefall.

Winchester is the best place in my opinion. Florance and Coos Bay are good to, just dont go to Sand Lak
it sucks!!! June through September you dont have to worry about much rain. More wind then anything. September and October are the best times to ride in Oregon.

There are noise restraints. I can't remember the exact db level. The first couple years that I went, I used my ESR pipe with stock muffler. The last couple years, I've just ran the ESR muffler as well. Haven't had anyone stop me or check me. I think if you are smart about it and don't rev it up right in front of the rangers, you'll be alright. Plus, a good packed silencer on a 2 stroke isn't nearly as loud as the 4 strokes.

dB level is 93 with an allowable limit of 2dB over.

Be careful with the rangers. I got 2 tickets last time I was down there - bikes sitting out of the trailer - not running. They claimed they heard us roll in off the sand...

4 strokes might seem loud at WOT, but they have no problem passing the test at 2k or 3k rpm (whatever it is). Our 2 strokes do.

TRX we should meet up sometime and go for a ride.

Depends what you are looking for. If you want crowds, vendor alley, drag races, higher fees, etc. Dunefest is good fun. If you like riding in the dunes and don't care about the rest, then dunefest is not the time to go.

What happened with the tickets? Just a fee to pay? I've heard a lot of different stories. Some said they impound your quad.

You might want to do a little research.. There is going to be both a dunefest and a sandfest this year with some of the sponsers and vendors going from one to the other.. Its kind of up in the air as far as what would be a better event. You can get more info on Sandlakeduners.com, there are a few threads about it in the events section.Sandlakeduners

I have a hard time picturing how the dunes are in Oregon so please explain. Are all these places e.g. horsefall, coos bay, winchester etc. all state run parks and have their own campgrounds like here in Cali? And if you camp in one of these places, can you access the other places just by riding on the beach? In other words, are they all connected? Also, how do you make reservations? What is/are the websites? I am looking to go this year but am confused to go about it. And for those who live in Oregon, what is the best time of year to go with decent weather and not too many crowds?

Let me see if I can explain. There are three dune sections that are about 20 minute drive apart and run by the state. Coos bay is farthest south, Winchester bay is in the middle, and Florence is on the North side. At coos bay there are several campgrounds. Horsfall is farthest south and spinreel is farthest north. You can ride all throughout coos bay area from one end to the other by beach and by dunes. Winchester bay has no beach access at all. It is a smaller area, but the best dunes and trails in my opinion. Florence sucks. At each spot there are paved parking lots for both day use and overnight camping use. There are fees. I am not sure about how to make reservations. Probably similar to making reservations in Pismo, exception through Oregon state parks. I normally stay in a hotel in either winchester bay or Reedsport. I have been several times at the beginning of august and the weather has always been nice. Only rained part of one day and a little bit of wind a few times. I've heard that aug. and sept. are the best months to go. I normally go on the second weekend in August. Just after dunefest. We are thinking maybe september this year. After labor day.

Sorry so long winded.

Dunefest is still in Windy bay and Sandfest is going to be farther south in Coosbay.

Michael88R Did a great job explaining the layout.. You cant ride between the areas because of rivers and towns and closures. Heres a few links to get reservations.
