Hey guys, long time rider, but new to 250Rs, so I could really use some input from guys that know these machines. I am currently in the market for a new quad and wanted something in a two-stroke that handles well and has general power atleast equivalent to a stock 450 (four stroke). I ride probably 60% desert (2700ft), 30% Mountains (5-7000ft) and 10% Dunes (Mostly St Anthony, which I think is like 5-6000ft)

I found what looked to be a great setup:

Very Clean
330 Kit
Full LED Intake & Pipe
Lectron Carb
+2 Arms
+4 Swingarm
Elka Shocks

But unfortunately the frame was cracked pretty good on the bottom near the left motor mount. So I ended up not buying that one.

Now I am looking at a build that is pretty much brand new parts minus the 1986 frame, gas tank and engine cases..and the motor is a "just broken in" 431 Puma built by Jerry Long, it's dune ported, on VP110, it's got an LED Puma pipe, Slingshot clutch, +5 stroker, 41mm PWK Carb, and a CR250 ignition.

Never been on a dyno, can anyone ballpark the HP on this thing?

How would this likely run in the desert and woods?

Thanks guys!

Welcome!

An OEM cylinder setup well can be comparable to stock 450s. It sounds like the first 330 setup was more in-line with what you were originally looking for. I've never ridden one, but the 431 Puma will be a lot of power, likely in the 70-80hp range as a ballpark. You didn't mention if the 431 Puma build has any chassis/suspension modifications. All that power in a stock or near stock chassis/suspension setup will only get you so far in the desert/woods.

No matter what you go with, if you ride in those different elevations make sure to adjust your jetting accordingly.

Thanks a ton for the response! Nothing really stock about this chassis, besides the motor build this bike has:

  • Brand new Elka Stage 4 Shocks
  • Roll Design A-Arms
  • TRX Spindles
  • Pumashine Gusset Kit
  • New OEM rear caliper
  • Fireball +4 Swingarm
  • Bryan May Billet Linkage
  • Urmozi Throttle
  • Rubber Precision Steering Clamps
  • Steering Stabilizer
  • Roll Stem
  • Billet Hubs
  • JJ&A Play Axle
And more lol.

Would you say those upgrades are sufficient to handle the power handling wise? Honestly I'm just not sure what to expect, I haven't been on a two stroke in over 20 years, my last 450 was around 50rwhp.

As far as jetting goes...this bike was jetted at about 2000ft, I do most of my riding around 2700ft, so I am guessing I don't need to rejet for my primary playground, but please correct me if I'm wrong. But I am planning on having to rejet for the mountains and dunes, if I have a good baseline, would the rejetting for higher elevation be pretty straightforward? Sorry for the ignorance, but I have never jetted a two stroke and over the last 10 years have basically been working with fuel injected vehicles, thanks a ton!

Oh man, that’s a beautiful R! You’ll be just fine with that one, lol.

As far as jetting for the change in elevation, you’ll actually go leaner the higher the elevation. The current jetting should be fine for your current 2,700 ft.

Here’s what I found from a little searching:
