New Case Halfs

Hey guys, I brought the topic of manufacturing new case halfs awhile back since we all know that at some point the supply of oem honda ones will be gone. Well I've gotten the equipment i needed to copy the oem ones, so here is where i am at.

I am in the process of talking to casting companies to try and determine the cost, and the amount of cases that would be required. I am still trying to determine the feasability as well as the demand for them. So if i was able to reproduce them would people be interested?? I would also get with C-Leigh Racing to discuss the possibilites of strengthening known weak points, would you guys be interested in these?? I'm just trying to gauge interest before i invest too much money and time.

So if this project does continue i will need a couple of people to volunteer case halfs that i can 3-D image. What i need are a left half and a right half. I know that some of you guys have undamaged ones laying around. I realize that you will be shipping them to me based on faith, and if there are any concerns or if you are interested please PM me. All I am trying to do is make sure that these machines live on.

So if you guys have any input please feel free to email me [email protected], PM, or post here. Any help or comments will be appreciated.

I am also working on getting examples of what the 3-D scanner can do. When i get these examples i'll be sure to post them.

Thank you for your time.

Over a year has gone by and no new info. It's truely unfortunate because now is the time they are most needed. The OEM cases are being discontinued.

I'm still more in favor of creating a set of counterbalanced cases for the CR250 because all those motor parts are still available.

Anybody have any experience with the CR250 in a quad? Are the tranny gears strong enough for a motor in a quad?

Any idea when on the discontinue of these? My source tells me I can still get 86-87 cases and only the right case for 88-89. This was as of today, 6/6/09 If you know it will be soon, it may be a good investment to buy a set.
I talked to a CNC guy about doing some billet cases, but it is just a HUGE project, and would ost alot of money...AND...you would have to sell them for quite a bit if you did have some made, not sure the general 250R population would play in that game. Only use drag guys i think would????
These would obviously be the best guys to contact about the project - they're already doing good work on the Banshee billet cases. Mattoon Machine:

http://www.mattoonmachine.com/

They might take on the 250R project?...
Pete, I'm not sure on the specifics, or how it works because the 88/89 right half is no longer available, the left is no longer in stock and the 86/87's are available but there is no stock.

NormalZ, I was thinking of contacting mattoon, however even if they can machine them, I think I need someone who is a mechanical or design engineer to create and engineer the design.
Keith at Matoon can design and machine them...I would seriosly think about having my guy do them if i knew people whould buy them to atleast cover my expense. Because you are prolly looking at about $2500 for a set of billet cases..... There will be alot more work to go into the honda cases then banshee for sure....
I'm not sure what kind of designing would have to go into stock style billet 250R cases, but as far as designing a counterbalanced set of CR250 cases or YZ250 cases or even CR500 cases, I'd be interested in finding out how much it would cost. If it was under $5000 I might see if I can come up with some funds to get the initial design and tests done. Then it's just a matter of people custom ordering if they are interested. Who's your guy or is it Mattoon?

no my guy is a local guy here, he charges me $30/hr for designing, and god only knows how much time would go into designing these and programming??? I dont think YZ cases or CR cases would be the way to go personallly....I think 250R would work just fine. Most all the internal parts are still avaliable, atleast the stuff that breaks....I bet the first set of cases would cost every bit of $5000...but if i can get enough interest, and at least make enough money to break even on the deal to keep these things alive im down....Im in the process of trying to have some quick change clutch covers made as well.......but again, they are not cheap! SOOOOO....WHAT WOULD YOU ALL PAY FOR A QUICK CHANGE COVER??? it would be a core type deal......I know there is alot of guys that could use one, and alot of guys that have the slingshot lock up that needs one, because the Direct Drive lock up is very expensive with the extended kick shaft....

I don't really see the point in designing billet cases - admittedly you could strenthen a few parts and get something for a big bore setup, but for that kind of money I'd rather order some OEM ones, to try to save them. I could order 9 or 10 sets and I'd be set for life. The CR250 is more appealing because of the powervalve, tons of years of parts, full production of parts. Pipe dreaming maybe.

Blasterman - are you developing a complete billet side cover with quick change or just a mod?

I think the complete cover would be awesome. The mod - I can't see paying more than $200-$250 since that is what they are used and without a new cover it shouldn't be too costly.
#1 Our R needs cases, probably within a year. So, I will be in for some, just not right this second. I have to get some somewhere, but I can't see myself buying an unproven casting. R&D would have to be done...

#2 I can't see myself paying anymore for a quick change cover than Patriot charges.... Less is preferred.
Who is Patriot?? Are you referrring to "backcountry" Dan???
Sent Mattoon Machine an email and this is what I got.....

Hi Wade, I have thought about making some cases for the 250r but know one has ever placed an order for any. I have been talking to Calvin at cp industries about a single with a banshee tranny. Thanks Keith
Thats funny, cause i sent Keith an email as well and thats about what i got to! LOL
talked with Kith more, he said a set of billet honda cases would be about $2000, as a estimate...

alll the cases are the same, its just 86-87 are bare, and 88-89 come with all the bearings, seals, etc.

right?

no more right cases for 88-89? FSOAB!

I think its the other way around. 86 and 87 have bearings and seals.
I thought at one time a few years ago ESR bought all the cases honda had. Try them if you need new cases for the time being.

Okay so honda is out right now but if there's orders, they will make some cases. It's going to cost more, but there will be cases available. The bike is too popular.

Keep new chains on your bikes and rebuild the cranks every couple years and noone will need new cases.
and don't forget the holy case saver....

heard that!! without one, i'd prob done gone through a dozen cases already. the cheapest insurance ya could ever buy. :)
and dont forget guys...............swingarm pivot bearings!! keep an eye on em, especially on the 88-89 swingarms cause of how close the swingarm sets againts the back of the engine cases. ive already had one bad experience where my swingarm wore a big hole in the case by the countershaft area. but luckily I work with a guy who has a welder that can weld aluminum and he fixed me up nice and re-enforced that whole area of the case.

I also got me a set of almost perfect cases (not spotless, but they have no cracks or breaks anywhere at all on em) off ebay for what I considerd pretty cheap at this day and age. right now they are just setting upstairs in a box with all my other spare 250r parts. I was planning on building another spare 250r motor since i have almost everything I need already, but I think now I may just hold on to em as spares.

iv got 3-4 sets of virgin cases, the only problem is we hack them up pretty good for these big cylinders! LOL we fill the lighting holes int he case, and then bore the bejesus out of them!! Thats why i think billet cases would be nice....never know, may have some one day. ;)
