finally tried to get that laeger R going....it fired up, idled, and had good low end snap, but when u hit wide open, it has absolutely nothing.... i've gone up and down with the jetting. i also moved the needle to the middle clip from the 2nd down from the top. that also did nothing. it had a 205rd, but i started using standard jets. i went from a 185 to a 178 to a 155 with no change. plug is slightly black but not much... if u hold it wide open, it acts like it wants to die...no breaking up, just zero, like i'm not even having the throttle open. what the hell! i was supposed to go riding tomorrow. oh, it's a ct265pv and a 39pwk.

i hate to say it, but when u hit it wide open it has nothing like when u melt a piston...but that's not the problem....

I don't want to send you chasing round and round, but it totally sounds like an ignition problem.Do you have another cdi box???

That what I'm thinking as well cause thats when it will show itself the most. Ignition problems will show up anywhere from mid throttle to wide open. Normally its just skipping at wide open, your must realy be messing up.
Now you sure you cleaned the p/c or paint off of all the ignition wire mounting points.

i'll check it...it's a new cdi also... i tested all the componets with an ohm meter, and they are fine...

it's got good spark...when u stab the throttle like u were warming it up, it reacts properly. it even runs fine till 1/2 throttle...but when u hold it wide open, it's struggling. like it can't clean itself out. i just did this with the quad sitting in neutral. the powervalve i notice is moving, and exhaust residue is leaking out of it...is this normal? anything i should be checking with the pv?

the exhaust doesnt have an unusual smell to it does it? you did a leak down test prior to mounting the engine didnt you? what color isthe plug after dropping way low on the main jet? if its still dark then i would suspect that you could possibly be sucking in tranny oil. just a thought. i've experienced it.

i just bought the quad a couple of months ago and just fired it up yesterday...i tried again riding it with a smaller jet. it runs fine on take off, turning, or short bursts of the throttle. it's trying to go wide open down a road, that it falls flat and loses power. like it's having trouble staying running. i gapped the plug and put a new plug in also. i tested all the electrical when i bought the quad since i had no spark and needed a new cdi. i also installed a new coil. the ground connection is good.

could it be the powervalve? i've never had one with a pv before. it's like the only thing i could think of. should exhaust gunk be coming out of it?

ESR PVs always leak out of the vent hose. CT PVs don't. As for the rotax style, I don't know. If the PV was stuck shut or something, it wouldn't have any problem staying running at higher rpms, it would just not have the power that it should.

no rags or mice! took filter off and checked air boot, and took off the pipe and silencer...everything is clear. i have been running it with the airbox lid on though...i'm going to try wthout it tomorrow morning and see if that changes anything. i highly doubt it, but i really don't feel like taking off the jug....i don't think the problem is there.

if the reeds were bad, what symptoms would the engine have running wise?

and if i have spark when i put it to the head and kick it over...could there be a problem still?

I wont get into why the lid caused performance problems ..hint= air fuel mixture ...

but I dont understand why an old thread was dug up

I realize that the airbox lid affects the air/fuel mixture. I dug up this old thread during a search and I was disappointed that there wasn't more detail as to why the airbox lid caused his problems. The lid threw off his jetting that badly?!? I fail to see how the problem 800screws was having could be attributed to the airbox lid exclusively, and I wanted some clarification. I use this site as a learning tool, asking questions of other members, and Neil specifically. Perhaps you could elaborate on things instead of dropping hints.

Oooooh yeah, man. The airbox lid can mess up jetting that much.

Look at a new 4-stroke quad, for example. Those things come so lean from the factory anyway, just to meet EPA guidelines. That thing can be totally bone-stock, pipe, filter, jetting - all of it. It's already lean as hell from the factory, and the intake systems are so corked up it's not even funny. You pull that airbox lid off, everything else stock, but already lean anyway... it's done. way too lean to even handle any throttle. They'll still start, but as soon as you give it anything, the stall out.

Airbox lids cork the intake supply alot. A whole lot. Once the lid is off, that lets in a massive increase in air.

If I was the OP, I'd jet that thing for the lid off, and run it like that. Depends on why he needed that lid, though.

I didn't realize that the lid affected things that much...like a cork in the snorkel (haha, that sounds funny...cork in the snorkel).
