i have an 86 quad... and a bought a 87 eng and some parts... now i now about the 87 being the longer rod eng .... but i also think i read somewere that the 86 had a steeper gearing in the transmition... is this true?..... i wanna get my bike all fixxed up nice... and the 87 eng had mint cases, outers are polished, centers are painted black... no broken pieces....and a full hinson clutch..were as my 86 has been welded on clutch casting by sprocket.. and had the mounts for the chainguard/ casesaver... busted off, i would like to go with the 87 eng but not if it changes my gearing significantly im hoping to get a 310 kit for one of the engs.... with the 87 i have the longer rod... which i can run the spacer plate with a 86 style jug.... and is supost to be better ...? :) buddy has a banshee thats piped and he can beat everyone right now.... but hes not the best rider, just has the fastest machine.... so if i can get close to his speed ill be able to smoke him on the bendy woods trails .. :p

That 86 tranmission will fit in the 87 cases, no problem. Yes, ratios are different 86/87 to 88/89 & you cant interchange the gears from one shaft to the other. I would recomend changing every part in the transmission & not just one gear change on both shafts.
Only problem, old 86 model gears were prone to busting easy, but if it has new Honda replacement gears, probably be ok. Shucks, an 89 model transmission gear can even bust, but not as easy as an old stock 86 model.
I realy wonder though, old as the R engines are today, how many stock gears are in them in use today.

Auhhh banshee, you might could do something with him on a mx or tt track cause that frame will wear him out in no time, but straight line, hes going to be hard to beat, you best be a real good rider else you could get your feelings hurt.
But hey, its a banshee, a 350cc & all its realy good for is drag.
