I don't think you will have a problem on your R if you want to get it registered in CA. As long as it is an 86-89. If you have a newer frame, just say 86-89.

i found out that any 2 stoke 97 or newer cannot be registered or ridden unless in closed course competition and 96 and older can be as long as they are 96 db or quieter. if BLM catches you on one that is 96db or louder they will ticket you and after 3 tickets the bike will be impounded

Where can I find this info? If there is a ban it isn't in place yet...

Maybe you are talking about the red sticker green sticker law?

Red sticker bikes can only be ridden 8 months out of the year.
All 2 strokes 2003 and newer get a red sticker but I think it used to be 1996 and newer...

That law was put into place a long time ago. You could still register 2-strokes, but only with a red sticker. I heard of some dirt bike guys only having red stickers, but never heard of anyone with banshees or blasters having a problem. Maybe quads were exempt. Don't really know.

Guys, the whole red sticker thing is crap. Most of the dune areas are now red sticker legal year round. The red sticker still applies in the national forests but I beleive all of the state parks are red sticker legal.
Go to the website below. You'll have to manually type it into your browser, I can't figure out how to create a link. Once at that site, there is a link to an adobe file which lists in detail the riding areas and restrictions. I didn't read thouroughly but there are many that show year round. Check it out.

im new and have some info to this: 2-strokes as far as i know are NOT banned in CA. in 96 they came up with the green/red sticker thing. any 2-stroke that is model year 2003 and newer AND has a 3 or C in the 8th digit of the VIN, then it is a red sticker, and all new closed-course competiton bikes are red sticker. so just about ALL 250Rs are safe under the green sticker rule. :D
