Which pipe would work best for MX/Dune riding? I'm currently running a TRX5 std. mount, 330cc with ESR low-mid porting. The TRX5 pipe lacks low end power and the TRX6 pipe is lacking on top end a little. Looking for something in between the 5 and 6 pipe. Is there an advantage to sticking with esr pipes to match the porting or would anyone's pipe work okay with the porting? I've mostly been considering Sparks, CT, PT, ESR, and LRD.
I've never had a problem with the TRX-5 lacking bottom end, so with that in mind you might want to try either a Sparks TT or a Sparks MX. I would say the TT would be a tad better than the ESR pipe on the bottom, although it is mainly a mid range pipe. The only problem is that Sparks does not produce their 2-stroke pipes any more. You are gonna laugh, but maybe try a Pro Circuit MX pipe. I had one on my Open A Trx 330 built by Tom Carlson at TC Racing, and it was an awesome combo. The only pipe that was better was my Sparks TT BB pipe, and they are nearly impossible to find now-a-days.

When I say the TRX5 lacks low end, I mean it is sometimes hard to keep it up on the pipe. Slowing down to make turns, I often have to downshift 1 gear or even 2. A lot of times, I'm shifting between 2nd to 4th because i change speeds so much. Also trying to pull paddles all the time probably makes a difference too. With knobbies on dirt, it would be a different story.

What is your gearing with paddles?

I'm running 13/39 gearing with 20" sand skate 2. I mostly ride dunes in a trail/mx style. Lots of climbs, bowls, turns, and jumps. Very little drag racing. In faster sections, the trx5 is awesome. I have some powervalve spacers that I'm going to try before anything else. The spacers act to stiffen the spring and keep the valve down longer, increasing the low end power.

Personally, all I do is drag race and I run 14/41 gearing pulling 2nd gear out of the gate with 22" 10 paddle 74+ RO haulers with no problem. The Trx-5 has tons more than the Trx-11 does for me. Besides changing pipes which can be expensive, if I were you, I would experiment with gearing a little bit.
