OK, newb here just an '86 250R complete less engine/trans for free. Looked for a stock replacement and there's no way I'm dropping $500+, if I'm dropping that much it will be into my AC 650H1 not a "freebee" quad. I have no "loyalty" to any particular manuf so I'm looking at all of them for a 250-500cc engine. Has anyone tried transplanting anything else into one of these? Got the welder, plasma, lathe, mill and ability to just about anything. Is there another engine that fits in easier than others? What about going air cooled rather than the water cooled? I'm not looking for a race machine, just a play toy. My property borders National Forest so I have 65,000 acres to play in and would like something a bit faster than the AC 650 H1's top end of 40MPH.

HONESTLY!!! regardless of what engine you decide/manage to get your hands on to put on the quad you'll spend in excess of 500.00. with everything else needed i just cant see it costing any less.

if your serious about getting this quad up and going you may as well do it right....... put an R engine on there.

I agree. Just put an R engine in there. It will be the best in the long run. There are lots of hidden costs to putting a different engine into a frame and it may not ever work very good.

OK, there's a small engine shop near me that I get all my chainsaw parts from and I was talking to him about this yesterday and he said he has a "junkyard" a little ways from his shop. Says he has Honda dirtbikes, 3 wheelers and ATV's out there I just have to pick through it. Best parts is he said whatever I find $200 or less since I am a good customer for chainsaw stuff. Off we go.

All he had at the shop was an air cooled Big Red engine, he's checking at home to see what he's got. If he doesn't have anything (he'll know next week) the quad is up for sale, I'll just wait and buy a Thundercat and give my wife the 650 H1.
