The kicker gears, springs, ratchet mechanism and all that crap messed up today on my 85 atc motor. I have yet to tear into it, but what all of that stuff usually messes up? I also have an 86 motor so I guess its gonna get used for parts to fix this one for now. If anyone has an got any good spare partsI guess I'm gonna be buying some soon so PM if you do. Also what is the deal on the later model years and the collar spacer that makes a difference on the clutch cover. It seems like I have read that somewhere but now can't find it. I know plenty of people have had this happen to them, but it happened to me today finally and I haven't ever worked on the kickstarter stuff because mine always worked. Any info will be greatly appreciated.

thanx

It finally warmed up enough today for me to work on it and all the gears seem fine. When it went out in seemed to skip over(it had skipped a few times before) a tooth or two on the starter gears then kinda locked up. The gears seem fine so could it be that the springs are no longer strong enough? Has anyone else had the same problem? I don't mind buying parts but I don't want to buy stuff I don't need.

thanks

I had that happen to me before, sometimes skipping gears and others catching. Trust me, its gets worse, untill they won't catch for anything. Mine started as slipped when cold, catched when hot, then slipped some when hot, then didn't grab at all. This was on my 85 atc250r, it got replaced with new gears. I have since bought a few sets of new gears, just to keep for spares if/when they become discontinued.
