I read that the float level should be 16mm which mine is. But would adjusting this give any benefit?

It's important for it to be set correctly - a fuel level too low will cause all your jetting circuits to be lean; too high and they'll all be rich. Having the fuel level off will cause you to run some weird size jets to get everything right. That's the first thing you should check before you start jetting.
