    New Project "Barn Find" 1988

Long story short, this was given to me. Going to start going through it, dumping time and $$$ into this R to make a super reliable dune bike. Has some older upgrades (cool head, FMF exhaust, Boyeson cage, K&N), and really needs some good old fashioned elbow grease. Any suggestions on some great dune set up's would be appreciated, A-Arms, Suspension, port/engine work for reliable duning/trail ability, exhaust, etc. Also, has anyone refinished some plastics? These are structurally sound but have some decent UV wear, thinking a sanding and sealing would work well on fenders and tank, so any suggestion on the sealer would be appreciated. Take a look and let me know your thoughts.

With some 0000 steel wool you might be able to restore that tank. Depending how deep that discoloring runs. Nice find though, those 88s are my fav

I’ve had a tank restored that looked worse than that,it looks new now the guy charges $250 for the restoration or he’ll swap out with a tank that’s done and in stock..

$250 for a restored tank? Ouch, seems like you could find one in damn near mint condition for that. Good thing is I am not going for that Country Club, trailer queen look. I wont skimp on ride quality, functionality, and reliability, but if it has some light rust spots or some fading here and there it won't ruin my ride. I will give it a go with 0000 steel wool and see how that treats me, thanks SandSlinger. There is nothing like a dialed in 88/89 R out on the dunes, something about it just raises hair on my arms, love it. I need to get this one back to life and put to use!

Going to buy new Ceet foam and red non slip cover, should do the trick for $130 total. Figure $2,500 - $4,000 will get this thing up and out there with my '89 and run all day. I will soon be looking for riding buddies out in Glamis/Pismo....
