What is the difference between an 86/87 CDI and an 88/89 CDI?

What is the difference between an 86/87 CDI and an 88/89 CDI? I know the 88/89 is bigger than the 86/87....but what else?

Is the rev limeter different? Maybe a different advance curve?

I have one of each for my project BUT, I think the 88/89 may be bad as it does not produce any spark. So I can at least get running with the 86/87 CDI but I am wondering if it is worth the cost to buy an 88/89 CDI?

    Thanks for any info!

Here is a copy of what I have posted before:

The HA2/CF502 is the 86-87 CDI, the HB9/CF552 is the 88/89 CDI. All CDI's will work on all years, 85-89 with the appropriate wire-harness and connectors, even on a 85 ATC250R.

The difference between the 86/87 CDI and the 88/89 CDI is interanlly the 88/89 has a larger capacitor, and an extra diode. Even the difference between an 85 ATC250R (besides the single connector) verses 86/87 and 88/89 is internal component size, and slight differences in performance....slightly different rev, curve, ect...

Here's a link to some testing that was done in the past - timing curves

Scroll about 1/3 of the way down the page for the right graph.
