Not much difference in Long verses Short rod engines, displacement is power and normally a larger CC cylinder will make more HP/TrQ...34-40MM carb?...Go with a 38MM-39MM, sounds like you want a little speed yet still ride on the lower gears as well with good throttle responce.

For nearly 10 years, I ran trails on my 86 with a 265cc 88 cylinder with a mild cleanup of the ports on a short-rod bottom end. With the 89 clutch update, a CR head gasket, 38mm A/S carb and an FMF exhaust, it did everything I needed it to do (on pump gas). I probably put at least 25k miles on it when I was in college, then I upgraded to a long rod crank and bigger bores. When I decided to build another trail machine, I went to my parts bin and dug out that same old cylinder, carb, reeds and exhaust. It's still loads of fun to ride a small bore in the trails.

Can't beat Honda OEM engines, cylinders and components for reliability & longevity...still the best after +24 years.
