    Kickback...improper firing?

Hey guys I just wanted a little info here, I've been riding my whole life but I'm new to the R and I've never dealt much with ignitions simply because I've never had to. Ok so I bought a 1986 a while back, rode it 2wice and the engine top and bottom went on me due to a cracked PVL flywheel, the machine had the entire PVL ignition system to include the CDI. I picked a complete running engine up with a 68MM bore, installed the engine and hooked up the stock engine electrical system up to the PVL CDI and I had it running 3 days ago and it ran fine. Now today I tried to start it and it kept kicking back on me and I probably could have made it run but I didnt want to because I felt that it was firing too early so I got on here and did a little reading and it sounds like the CDI box is to blame and that I should switch to OEM to solve my issue. Also, I dont know if it makes a difference or not but I pulled the plug cap off and kicked it and it has great compression with no kickback. The engine came out of a shifter cart with OEM trx CDI so it seems unlikely to me that the timing would be off(I could very well be wrong). One more thing is that I checked out a few OEM CDIs and there are a ton of plug ins on it and I only have 4 wires coming out of the engine's stator. Here is a photo of my engine on the stator side with the wires.trx.jpg

Oh and since the PVL CDI/Ignition coil is one piece that's all I have for my electrical system...I need to know what I need to buy to make it run, Im nut running any lights, just ignition. I know I need the OEM CDI and Ignition coil w/plug wire but what else do I need?

A/C reg, coil, stator w/pickup, flywheel, CDI, no lights you can go with Pro Design kill tether, thats pretty much it except wiring harness. and just make sure your connections and grounds are clean and wires are not cracked bent pinched etc. in your harness. go get you a manual for the trx they are like 30 bucks but it will show you everything. great wiring diagrams to. and i dont think your bike is firing early. there really isnt a way to retard the timing. try new cdi?? remember they are pretty high compression with new rings and piston. good luck

Sounds like your CDI is off or bad...get a fresh start and set-up the stock IGN system with a new or used OEM CDI.

Ive ordered an OEM CDI, wiring harness and ign coil, I don't need to run an AC regulator without lights correct?

Make sure you got a fresh spark plug & good boot, good ground, clean connectors and double check your stator as well...

Well, I was gone on a 2 week training operation but I got back yesterday and installed the OEM cdi and wiring harness and now it starts right up, no problems! Thanks again for all the advice guys.
