What setup would equal my banshee power wise?

I'm a long time banshee owner and its time for a change, I've always wanted/liked the 250r (chassis is amazing me, i love the look, but don't like the 250cc power). I recently purchased an 87 250r in pretty much stock form, I'm going to rebuilt this bike from a to z but i need some advices on wich motor to built. I would like to pretty much equal my banshee power wise so i dont feel sad about the R. I don't want a straight drag motor since i'm kinda tired of top end power only, i would love to get a great MIDRANGE/top end instead of only top end on this Motor.
My current setup on my banshee is the following:
    - Unported Cub cylinders (68mm bore)
    - 4 Mill Crank (58mm stroke)
    * Thats a 421cc motor*
    - Cool head w/21cc domes (Pump gas)
    - Snyper Pipes
    - 35mm PWK'S Carbs
    - Vf3's ect ect...

I would guess its about 65hp-70hp since it's unported but like i said there's is no midrage on the cubs (Only new serval cylinders does).
I don't want to beat my shee but i want it to be pretty close, i would also sacrifice a top end for some midrange power. I think i might have to go in the 400+cc setups to achieve my goals.
Wich setup should i built ?? any inputs would be appreciated !!!

    Thanks, Chris

You're probably looking closer to 80-85 HP on the banshee IMO. But any 250-based motor you build with a good amount of power will be a fun rider.

Kind of OT here but I am amazed how people want gobs of HP but they're not willing to pay for it. I'm not accusing the OP of anything just stating how people back down on a motor build when they see the final price tag. If you want HP you gotta pay for it.
So with that being said you will need that motor gone through split cases and all. You'll most likely want the upgraded crank bearings installed, ensure the shift forks and gears aren't worn. Then you need to bore the casings for a big bore. rebuilt counter balancer and the list goes on and on
If you want to get into the 60HP+ range you're probably looking at ~$2500+ (it's monopoly money until you sign the check) for that to happen and then you'll also need to pony up and buy a pipe. Pretty much anything over 310 requires a big bore pipe otherwise you'll cook your motor. 310 kits (if ported right) can make upwards of ~54HP or so on 110 gas.

I've never used Carlos before I mean no disrespect however I can tell you a man that has lived and breathed these machines since the racers like Gary Denton made them THE bike to have and that's Arlan Lehman LEDPERFORMANCE.COM. He has built many many national winning motors and could certainly hook you up. He is a man I respect and trust and the ONLY person I will let touch my bike. Porting is an art and he just flat out gets it. There's a reason Bill Balance and Jermiah Jones (and other top racers) used/uses him.

Thanks for your inputs guys !! deadly don't worry i don't expect to spend 1k only on this motor ... i'm really motivated on my R project but don't want to spend 4k on a setup that will only make top end hp .. like i said i'm not building a drag bike i want some tq too. actually i would do a trx500 hybrid if the damn cr500 motor wasn't vibrating that bad.. i tried one last year and this thing was a blast to ride ... but after 15 mins of riding my whole body was numb lol. We was pretty much neck to neck when we did a few laps on the ice. Is there a setup out there that would get close to cr500 powerband?
    thanks, Chris

I would think something like a well ported and set-up 363 sphynx would fit the build here.

I'm not done yet but this is what I currently have on a non PV Sphynx I'm working on. Dyno run taken in 6th gear starting at ~3000RPM. Is that Torqey enough for ya?
Should be getting ~ another 5 before it's said done and over with. But this setup runs ~$3K.

I'm thinking it'd be fairly easy get over 70 but there just comes a point of f-ing with reliability and to me pinching every stinking last pony isnt worth possible problems.

I am selling the 300kit (LED PERFORMANCE) I mentioned easlier. 54HP on 110 with ~7 hours on the top end rebuild with an LRD Team B chrome adjustable pipe and Rad valve with triple stage reeds. If you're interested drop me a PM and we'll talk. I'll swing you a great deal.
And here's this top end in action (before top end was freshened up)

That shee was kicking all the 4 pokes asses. We were on a long trip and I was trying to save gas so I was just watching. All of a sudden I looked to the left and right of me and everyone was smiling at me. I said, "What??" They said - go get that a-hole. As you can see he didn't do so hot Even Arlan said that bike ran every bit as good if not better than any motor he ever built for Bill Ballance.

People think buying stuff from ESR is awesome but they truly don't know the power they are missing out on until they get an experienced porter.

Its alot easier to get more power out of the bigger twins rather than a single piston, all it takes is money. I think if money allows it go with the CP industries sphynx. I have went the ESR route with my 330 and while it ran, it ran good, but it didnt run long. My sphynx hasnt had one single problem and has gobs more power and torque. With just the cylinder bolted on (no porting) with a 4 mill stroke I am sitting around 57hp and 37tq. I cant get an accurate reading because my clutch was slipping at the higher end of the RPMs. Im not really worried about my dyno numbers thou. It runs awesome and holds its own against most at the dunes. 3k is about what you should look to spend with one of these engines to have it done right. Like Deadly said, if you want the power you gotta pay for it.

I had 58 stock (bolt on as is) with the Sphynx. The cool part about the Sphynx cylinders is the water jackets around the exhaust port. Sure helps keep the exhaust temps down. The Sphynx is just an all around beautiful design IMHO. And I couldn't agree with you more about peak HP. There just comes a point and time where HP is pure bragging rights. I was absolutely in love with my old setup. It could whip some ass, bring me out of digs 4 strokes couldn't make and the R jumps like an angel with wings. I just had a deal approach me that was too good to pass up on and I upgraded. There's just no other way I could've afforded it otherwise. Truth be known after the top end, custom intake and custom tuned chrome pipe the bill (if I had to pay) would've come to $3300 and some change.

I've been pretty lucky as of late and I'm thankful. It helps offset all the junk I bought and the other issues I've experienced over the past 12 years.

I can't stress enough that suspension is way better than HP any day. You may not win many races but you win in the morning looking at everyone hobbling around like they're 70
