new guy with a stock head squish question

im new around here as i just got an 86 that i am completely rebuilding. the motor is a stock stroke stock cylinder with some pretty good looking port work done. got motor back together and just used the stock head gasket that came with the gasket kit (measures .080"). using .060 thick solder cranked it over and didnt smash the solder at all(obiously). so i took the head gasket out tightened head back down and did it again. still didnt smash the solder. so using thicker solder i came up with a measurement of .070" with no head gasket. i remember reading that these like to be in the neighborhood of .040" so is thee something i am missing? with the head gasket on my squish must have been in the neighborhood of .150" which seems crazy to me. i kicked motor over when gasket was on and it felt pretty stout to have this loose of a squish band. figured i would ask before i sent the head off to be milled and screwed something up. should i do a combination of having the head milled and getting a thinner gasket to achieve .040ish? thanks in advance

this motor might be a good candidate for using 1 of the pieces from the oem 3 piece head gasket. throw that cometic pos in the trash that comes with the wiseco piston kits. make sure you perform a UCCR first. do a search on uccr and it will make sense.

I would also say to talk to carlos, I have been talking to him about my setup and it is not as simple as just plaining the head!!

Look under the BDT Motorsports sponsor section in the Forum to determine your UCCR. Make sure the Solder squish test is giving you a good reading, it sounds like it is. Note that most OEM stock cylinders shipped with 1MM to 2MM below deck clerance. Your .150" does sound like it is at the extreme end and should be reduced to .040" to .060" total squish clearance, however; I would first make sure your UCCR allows a lower squsih...

Also look at your port timing and what you are looking to achieve in performance (your application). This will help you determine if the cylinder needs to be decked (milled/turned) on the bottom or top as well as how much work needs to be performed on the head/dome and what head gasket thickness to use.

ok thanks carlos for all the info. i will start looking into it and see what i come up with. it is awesome how helpful the sponsors are on here. ive spent a lot of time on banshee hq the last few years and it doesnt happen as often over there. good to see sponsors help out with more than just selling parts.

Anyone can sell parts, specially at a discount...offering full technical & customer support is what separates the sponsors on the this forum from the "run of the mill" parts discounters & builders. Lot's of good folks on TRX250R.Net...!

Glad to help if we can, thanks!

as far as port timings i really have no idea. got this thing as it is and it has definitely been ported. i can take some measurements off the ports if that helps. im not super picky about setup since i do a lot of different types of riding. its somewhat of a budget build. just wanting to get a little more compression without getting too tight or screwing something up. thanks for the help
